Description
This picture is really old, but I figured, why not post it? -w- Even though Semi's wife is never going to make an appearance in the story or comic, I still wanted to have a proper design for her. I don't think I've uploaded her anywhere before? I knew right away that I didn't want her to be a skeleton, but still something that would fit well together with one (so Gaster's design makes sense) That's when an imp came to mind. Her body proportions is vaguely based on imp Midna from Twilight Princess upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia… only taller. Taller than Semi, and she loved to rub that in his face XDThis picture could have taken place maybe 25-30 years before the events of 'But First Tea'? Something like that at least XD

Thank you! I've been very uncertain about her design, but in the end I went with this one ^^' Yas! Haha! Now all I need to figure out is HOW XD I got an ask yesterday where the asker wanted to know how baby skeletons are made. I'm tempted to making smol Papyrus want to know too, and Semi trying to give a funny answer before Gaster stops him, or maybe have Gaster staring right at the reader after Pap's question and then asking the asker 'what have you done?' XD
... mainly because I have no good answer yet. XD All I know is that I think it differs from boss monsters?

XD just a very awkward situation for everyone
how do you know it differs from boss monsters??
i have 2 theories, and only one applies to you X3
1. monsters split their souls and the halves fuze into one being. it takes a long time for the parents to recover and they lose their immortality. the child looks like a genetic mix of the two and no pregnancy is needed, the couple just needs to stay close together to give time for the soul to fuse.
2. one monster chooses to carry the growing soul of the child, and the other parent funnels in magic whenever they can to stabilize and strengthen it. this results in the child looking like the carrier, but survived thanks to the strength of the other parent. you could call it pregnancy, but it doesn't rely on gender to work. the parents use up so much power that they lose their immortality (i headcanon all monsters are immortal until they have children. if the child dies before they do they get their immortality back but look the age they aged to)
waddya think? might still need some work, or a third idea would be nice uwu

Sorry for taking 10,001 years to get back to this >< I've been really lazy lately
Ooo, I like those ideas!
I think I read somewhere, possibly in the conversation with Gerson, that your first theory is actually very much correct, but only applies to boss monsters. Unless I misinterpret it. It does sound like a very good way of explaining it though! I like it a lot and I can definitely see it apply to all mosters!
YOUR SECOND THEORY, I REALLY LOVE.
It makes it such a more intimate experience for both parents! Even though the offspring would look like the carrier, the other part put such a huge part of themselves into to ensuring the survival of the child.
How about maybe a combination of both? One monster, regardless of gender is chosen as a carrier. (there are no wrong or rights in the monster society and no preferable option. It's completely up to each individual couple) They fuse their souls together, resulting in a small fragment of a new soul, kept and nourished in- or connected to the carriers soul. This takes it's toll, naturally, so the carrier needs support magic from their spouse in order to keep the new soul alive and well.
Since the child was made from their parents souls fused together, the child takes the appearance of both of them. Perhaps one part more than the other, depending on who put the most of their magic into it? While the carrier gives a constant flow of magic, the other part could chose how much magic to put into the new soul?
The child could theoretically survive with a single parent, but maybe be much smaller? Like the Heat Salesman, or the Fox Head?
When the soul has developed enough to sustain itself, it disconnects to the carriers soul and takes on a physical form, beginning life as a baby. It still requires a lot of magical energy, but at least now it can eat on its own.
