Hm, the power of three e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/> I'll be the third to critique this!

Anyway, I have to begin like this: Your work is stunning, it always is. However, when I compare this to your other works, I find myself disappointed somehow. It's not on par or something, but the good news is, I think I know why.

I think it's all in the lighting. I think it's flushed. You have too much light going on and it's hard to tell where the light's coming from. I mean, I can see the shadows, but they're so weak, it detracts from the realism, I think. The candles lend nothing to the light, not even a glow on her hair. You and I both know that the Nova hair catches light, maybe even too much. Speaking of catching light, his bicep reflects too much, I think. I see nothing but the white light there.

His hair looks like it was taken from an Anime, no problem with that, but it doesn't fit the realism here. And his pants look too big in the waist and, despite the belt, about to fall down, however, I know that some clothing articles in certain poses don't want to act right, so maybe that's it. Her hair flies back a little far at the nape of the neck and is reminiscent of a barbie-doll's hair... however, that's essentially what Victoria is, a digital Barbie.

Ok, I'm done being negative.

The moon - You know I always love how you sneak the moon into your renders. and the trail of fog looks like it's directing, not only catching, the moonbeam to the lovers. I love that.

I love the poses... It says to me that he doesn't want her to go, but he's cherishing the fact that she's in his arms. The look on her face says to me that she doesn't want to go, but realizes she must, and even to the point that she wishes he would just let her go, rather than cling and make things harder.

Her dress is elegant, the length of her hair majestic, and I love the color of it, as well... standard, I know, but I can't help admiring dark auburn hair.

I MUST agree with Stage in that her feet are most assuredly ON the floor, not above, below or through it, as is hard to do in any rendered piece, and the candelabra is a nice touch, the glow of the candles elegant and inviting, even if they don't really seem to give off the light.

Top it off with the starry night beyond, and you've got a great thing going on here.

Thanks! Appreciate the critique! I'll be sure to pay more attention to the lighting next time.

The male character looks great..his expersiion, the light and shadow on his skin, all of it is great. The femail character seems a little stiff and I will agree with the other critique, she kind of seems removed. Maybe he's not her type...lol. That said I do like the concept and of course I think your work is beautiful. To nail a historical romance is tricky and alot of time you can cheat by getting backdrops to match the time period you have in mind. Something to keep in mind, most readers of romance are women and prefer to have the man in the dominant pose. Remember those old eighty bodice ripper covers? He's on a horse and she's clinging to his legs while it looks like he's dragging her across the prairie and she's about to bust out of the bodice of her dress? Yeah - those were the days. Good times. LOL But seriously, the man usually was and still is usually the dominant character on a cover.

I don't think a dominant male is necessary. Dragon Wytch, a paranormal romance, has one of the sexiest ladies on the cover I'd ever seen. And nothing else.

The Joanna Archer series "Signs of the Zodiac" feature no one but Joanna Archer on the cover in some "tomb-raideresque" pose, there's a demon in the background of one, nothing dominant. Again, paranormal romance.

In fact, every romance novel I've bought only has women on the covers... I own a few, but only paranormal romance. I've seen a few normal romance novels of late because everytime I go to Wal-mart, I hope to see the next sign of the zodiac in paperback. I gotta say... the male is never dominant. Times have changed, women are more independant. I think they like to see the woman take charge.

Um...90% of romance books have a dominant male. I didn't say it was neccessary but something to keep in mind. As a publisher, i try to give advice to help artists and writers both make it in the industry...not to say that the ENTIRE industry is one way or the other. I can only offer advice that stems from my own experience in this industry in order to help someone get a contract.

lol...ahhh, yes. The good ole days of Johanna Lindsey and the fabulous Fabio covers. There are days when I still get the urge to curl up with one of those. I have all my old books boxed up, but you can be sure I'll be breaking them out and studying them very soon.

I agree with both of you. A more dominant male and a better connection would have made a world of difference with this one.

Thank you so much for the critique! And for the fun jaunt down memory lane. hehe!

I find myself looking at this piece for several minutes to really take it in and get a feeling for it. It has very much an art feel to it almost like a renaissance work in its pose.

In away I feel as though both characters are in their own emotional space rather than sharing the emotions with each other. I get that feeling because neither is looking at the other.

The window on the wall, is like a looking glass, a mystical or dreamy object, perhaps telling the future which tends to make me feel a dream sequence with this image.

Technically the image is superb. The shadowing around the feet of the female character leaves no question that her feet are on the floor, often one of the more challenging things to do with 3D art. The glow of the candle light gives a feeling of realism. And the tones and textures of the characters is very well done. Finally there is excellent depth in the image, a feeling of space.

As with all of your work, the image is exceptional, professional quality. Excellent work my friend!

I was going to say it looks like the cover of a Harlequin romance but I wasn't familiar with the term bodice ripper. Can you tell its no my genre lol

You're very welcome, just keep creating awesome art is my reward

Perfect! I was definitely going for a historical romance novel feel with this one.

I do see what you mean about the characters not connecting, though. I think you're right. I think I should have either had her looking down or him looking up. I'm definitely rusty on my touchy feely images. hehe. All that bloodlettin', ya know.

Thank you so much for the critique, Stage! I really appreciate you taking the time to look at it for me and point out the areas for improvement.

Argh, the info boxes are covering up the image, so I can't totally see it! From what I can see it looks quite lovely, although I agree the lighting could be more dynamic, maybe even a candle-lit scene would be a nice ambience for this sort of scene?

...The male's chest is a little bigger than my liking, when you see the rest of him - unless he does only push-ups; but even then, it offsets his arms...

Maybe it's just me, though.

Bodice ripper??

I'm noticing this one... the lighting... just... ok, I'll shut up and critique it later for ya... but that lighting...

maybe I just need some rest... I've been fighting with Windows 7 networking.

Bodice ripper is what they call romance novels. That was the feel I was going for.

ah. smut. or at least that's what my mom calls romance novels LOL. eh, I go for paranormal romance, but not just straight romance. romance is boring, it's gotta have a fantastical twist if I'm to read about it LOL.

Thank you! The hair I used is called Nova. I love it because it's so long and wavy and has really great texture to it.

The scenery I used is Babelon by Fabiana and the dress is Calliope from Daz3d. Lots of good products in this one. Makes my job a lot easier.
