Description Here's an updated picture of O-jin, who's been in my gallery for a while. I added a couple of ornate pieces to his thigh, I\'m thinking of doing a full fledged HF update to him since he wouldn't need much and I've got some white HF armor. I've given some thought to his back story as well, I've determined that he's of Skakdi origins, not sure if I want him to be undead or not.

For those of you that are new to him, here's a little bit about him

O-jin. (ow jean), Malevolence, sadism, insanity, animosity and evil incarnate. Perhaps the nastiest Villain one could come across. He is a ruthless killer. He's rather tactless and quite mad as well. Its rumored that he's not even alive, that he is a demon or apparition. Anyone who is said to have seen the eyes of this demon were slain by him for that very act on its own. O-jin's strength doesn't necessarily lye in physical strength or speed, but more so his quick unpredictable fighting and skillful use of his scythe.

I drew from a Japanese influence on this character. for instance his hat. It is suppose to be a shallow rice hat. His face is also suppose to be something Japanese. Oni, which means "demon" in japanese are popularized in japanese folklore Oni usually have horns and a very Toothy mouth or smile. Samurai often would wear masks of oni as a scare tactic. I wanted him to basically be a Japanese ice demon. His scythe was a natural choice. He's also supposed to have a hint of "death" in him, which is why he's somewhat skeletal looking and he has the scythe.

Thanks Ray. Its not that custom, the lower limbs, hands and feet still are standard. But I might change up the lower limbs. The feet may just stay the same.

I really like O-jin. He's a unique MOC and the fact that you drew influence from Japanese folklore makes him really interesting.

Thanks. I think its mostly that hat, take it away and he becomes a lot more typical I think. I agree, the influence really makes me want to know more about him. I wanted to write out his back story more, but I couldn't cause biosector is I guess reworking itself and so I couldn't do the research I needed. When writing in bionicle I like to keep things as cannon as I can.

It's funny how much personality a couple of parts can add.

At least you're not writing in the Bionicle language. That would be a little bit TOO canon.

It really is, or like a couple of Aiden's(maple) MOCs where the whole thing is built around one part.

Hehe, yeah it would be, just a bunch of circles with lines and dots in them. XD

Surprisingly, I still remember some of the letters from it.

Really? Heh I don't. I remember they were lines and dots and slashes but not which one went to which letter.

Some of them were really obvious. O, T, K, and X especially. Those are really the only ones I remember, and that's just because they're the regular letter inside of a circle.

Oh okay. Its been so long since I've seen the alphabet so I don't remember.

well, I don't know enough about your art form to really be a legitimate critic! what appeals to me about lego art (and this piece in particular) is the lines, the balance of a piece--(whether or not it is asymmetrical, it must still have a balance--a pleasing form) combined with originality. for me--the headpiece is what grabs my attention first and makes me want to study more of it. how's that?

Same goes to your craft. I can't comment on specifics, like "the tattering of that piece of cloth is well executed" I honestly wouldn't know, but I could say that I like it, or that it makes the piece look good. I've been following a blog on tumblr that post lego creations and they're mostly from flickr, there's a lot of really talented MOCers there, both system and bionicle/HF. Here I'm sorta a big fish, there, not as much. Hehe.

That's exactly what it was supposed to do. That hat really makes this MOC, it was pretty much built around that concept. If you take that piece away, then its a rather typical "bad guy" figure. I basically did the same thing with Matteo and his hat and mask. I should explore giving a MOC its character that way more. Aiden(maple) has got some MOCs that were made by doing what he calls "staring at one piece for too long." Its lead him to create things I don't think he'd make other wise. You ever have that kinda thing happen, where you look at a something and think of something you can do with it and end up making a whole new creation from that?

late again with my responses--this time tho', I got distracted with that bloody DD art theft thing. in answer to your question--yep, things tend to morph while I'm making them and ideas for new works pop in my head. sometimes, something I planned for a particular sculpt just doesn't work but I can see it in something else--often just a prop or a piece of antique material will spark my imagination.

Thanks cool. I bet with your craft its a lot easier to do that. There's lots of cases where I'd love to do a project with a piece because of its shape, but it only comes in one or a few colors that wouldn't work for it. Also, I'm running out of certain kinds of parts to make things. I've got a ton of parts, but not the nuts and bolts that hold it all together or provides structure to it.

My imagination is sparked more by concepts than anything else. I go "hey it'd be cool to do a bionicle version of this." Like I wanna do a really big elephant, and make a Mini-dirigible for Matteo, which would still be huge. I've got a lot of ambitious ideas but lack the inventory of parts to do so.

keep a list of stuff you want to do. whenever I get an idea, I jot it down--I've got a pile of those notes floating around! eventually, you'll get the right parts and then you'll be all set!

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to LabyrinthCreations [2011-12-23 21:13:01 +0000 UTC]

I don't need a list. I actually have a pretty good memory for that kind of stuff. Here on DA, I talk to so many people its just hard to keep track of what I said to who. I gotta do some stuff for a friend, then I want to see if I can squeeze out a few of the concepts I've got. One I want to attempt is a skeletal fire steed with a chariot for this guy [link]

Ah, asian influences :3. Was the asymmetricality a choice or lack of parts?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to Akara0820 [2011-12-17 15:56:50 +0000 UTC]

yes, it was a choice. I've done too much symmetrical work, I've needed to "asymmetry" it up, so O-jin was one of the ones I wanted to do that to.

Nice. Better pics. I have just a question:
Planning to put HF armouring on him? Isn't it a bit too smooth? It's just that I have the impression that this guy looks best with some spikiness. But then again, there's nothing like experimenting. And since you're planning on changing his background, eh, it may not be a bad choice, after all. However, even Skakdi are sort of spiky...

Plague-Doc-Matteo In reply to Cave-Shinobi [2011-12-17 16:03:23 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. Ummm your right, I didn't consider that. HF is really smooth, I just wanted add the HF armor to his thighs, maybe his chest, but now I think I'll scratch that. The idea came from the fact that I want to use those bone pieces from the Ninjago sets, some of those new claw/teeth pieces to really flesh out his "spiky/skeletal" look, but I've got this thing about not wanting to use two or three pieces from a certain year and calling that that year's update. If you look closely I do keep certain years off my MOCs depending on what year its from. Ryakk-2006 or back, Mototaur-2008 and back, etc. But I've yet to do any updates to my "pre DA figures" with anything from 2009 or on, and definitely no HF stuff. The replacement for atlas will be a modern build, and he'll be getting the innenrrad so that'll bring the HF into my toa series. But my "bad guy" series would need the HF update on someone, I just haven't figured out who yet because my parts in colors that I could work with on them is limited.
