I’m here from project comment. I really like the design and background of the planets, and they look very realstic. however, i feel like the planets aren’t really attuned to the background, they don’t look like they are connected to the background enough. as for your question, I really enjoy this piece, it looks alot like an actual picture of a planet you could find in a solar system; it looks very life-like and realistic. I feel like you do better in lighting, as your pieces really stand as they look like they are indeed in space. as a lover of galaxy-styled things, i really love your art, and i think i might comission you in the future. your art is great, but it could use some work.

Hi there, and thank you very much for the comment! I agree that my backgrounds need work -- it's one of the areas that I have been actively concentrating on for the past few months. Ah well, one step at a time
P.S. For "Gallery at a Glance", it's best to leave your comment directly on the gallery page, rather than on an individual piece.
Thanks again!

700pts in my donation pool, or $7 to my PayPal. I'll send you a link to an unwatermarked version in my sta.sh, and you get to name this one in my gallery
EDIT: Adjusted price down. Haven't had the change to redo my prices on adopts yet.

You do really splendid planets.
What do you use to create and/or render them?

It's near 100% in GIMP, though I have used a little paint.NET when I need to make gas textures (it has a better liquify plugin). Thanks for the compliment

Excellent planet. Do you do these by hand or use a special action/software.

Hi, deejay, thanks for the question.
I create all of my planets by "hand" in the GIMP. I start by creating the continent shapes (check out my brushes: planetrix.deviantart.com/art/C… ), and stitch together a planet texture from a bunch of other photos (textures.com). Then it's a matter of combining the two and doing a lot of tweaking for contrast and lighting, and adding special features like clouds (sometimes NASA cloud textures, sometimes not), lights, ice caps, craters, etc.

Have you ever made a water world planet where the planet is a global water world?

I have, but I wasn't completely happy with it. I want to try again, though.

I currently have a intelligent alien race called Aquas that take place on a water world a few of them end up on earth as pets living in suburbia after NASA brings a few of them back to earth. Daddy where is my new bigger tank for my birthday
Their planet I picture being like earth expect it's all water with large chunks of seaweed floating in the oceans that the Aquas feed off of.
Sometime in the future I would want to commission you for a planet.

Sure thing, I could definitely do something like that. My commissions page covers my prices, and I would be happy to answer any questions you have in a note. Thanks for the consideration!

Beautiful!
The next step which I never really did, would be to add city lights on the night side, or even structures in the orbit.

Thanks! I've made a couple attempts at city lights (here and here ), but am definitely still learning the process for those. Seems like some artists just use NASA satellite images for lights, but I'd like to find a good method for creating them from scratch.
Orbital structures are definitely a next step! Might have to do a feature journal on those sometime -- I've found some really awe-inspiring examples on DA.

Yes it´s difficult. Many make huge circle lights on moons, but someone said that would be useless in that scale
and he doesn´t get why so many make it XD What do you think?

Not quite sure what you mean by huge circle lights -- can you post a pic?
Looking at night sky images from space, it looks like lights grow out in clusters and lines. Kinda like clumpy webs, I guess.

Ahhhh, I see. I've noticed that style quite a lot, too. I think it *does* make sense on a planet like Coruscant (which is supposedly covered by one gigantic city), because those big circular lights would be made of millions of smaller lights along a curving line, kinda like our highways. satellite image another satellite image
If you have a super-advanced civilization, I imagine they would eventually get rid of the "messy" layouts of their cities and opt for a more structured look.

Ah ok so you think they might really do gigantic circles.
I also think it is really cool, but this one comment where someone said
it would never make sense in that huge scale to make it, doesn´t go
out of my head.

I see no reason that alien cities (or future human ones) might not have perfectly symmetrical geometry that is observable from space. Might not make sense for near-future humanity, though. xD Wish I knew the reasoning behind that guy's comment.
