Description
The Bengaluru class of destroyers came out of a 2032 program to create modern, home grown Indian warship on par with vessels like the Chinese Type 919B and Type 057 destroyers. Based on the venerable Visakhapatnam class, the Bengaluru aimed for a more cost efficient hull design while still maintaining a modicum of stealth. The ship was armed with the DRDO KJ-1800, India's first domestically produced rail-gun, and while smaller than contemporary weapons used by the United States or China at only 60mm, it matched its rivals in terms of rate of fire and accuracy. The inclusion of a high resolution thermal imaging system meant the KJ-1800 could double as a point defense weapon. Other standout weapons included the RBU-6000S, a modernized version of the RBU-6000 and 4 AN/SEQ-4A lasers. Initially India was in talks with Russia to acquire their first naval laser system but delays in delivery and cost overruns led them to turn the US, a move that 'cause no small amount of international turmoil. Much of the rest of the ship's equipment was similar to its predecessor with small, but notable, improvements to things like it is sensors, fire control and other electronics. India would ultimately order 5 Bengaluru class ships with the first delivery being made in March of 2034.
