The JS Mirai and her 5 sister ships the Yoake, Chiheisen, Nozomi, Ishi and the Kettei were produced as a result of Japan's shift in military doctrine and budget in the early 2020s. Developed in conjunction with the United States, who would not procure the ship themselves but would develop their Pacific fleet doctrine around it, the ship was envisioned as a mobile air defense fortress. The cornerstone of this capability being the THAAD II missile system. Developed using technologies from both the original THAAD and the Patriot PAC-3, THAAD II represented the ultimate in long range, high altitude interception capability. Able to intercept aircraft, hypersonic missiles, satellites, and crucially, ICBMs in any stage of flight. Most of THAAD IIs specifications are highly classified but it is known that they possess a range in excess of 230nm and come in both proximity fragmentation and pure kinetic kill variants. Of her 96 VLS cells 32 of them, those to the aft of the main superstructure, are dedicated solely to THAAD II missiles. The rest of her cells carry a mix of RGM-77 Javalin, BGM-119 TLAM, BGM-119 TASM, RIM-161 SM-3 and RUM-144 ASROC, with a total complement of 184 missiles, 92 of which are always THADD II. Her point defense is comprised of 5 "Yama kaji" or "wildfire" 30mm CWIS and 4 RIM-116D. She also carries 12 dedicated torpedo launchers for expanded ASM warfare capability. Her 2 MLJ-10 Railguns are modified from their stock configuration to allow for enhanced anti-air capability. Able to fire both proximity fragmentation and kinetic rounds accurately at air targets at ranges in excess of 120nms. Finally, a double wide hanger capable of launching helicopters, VTOL transports or even F-35Bs if needed, rounds out her capabilities.

Entering service in 2031, the Mirai was always envisioned as an air defense vessel. As a result her multi-mission capability is somewhat substandard when compared to contemporary ships like the Oregon Class Battleships and even the aging Arliegh Burks. While she is without a doubt the most capable ship in the world when it comes to intercepting aircraft, missiles and even ICBMs and her ASW abilities are likewise without peer, she is truly a "master of one" in a world of "Jacks of all trades".
