The reason police are often compared to rotten apples is that a rotten apple in a barrel is thought to speed the spoilage of others.  I doubt many folks thin all of the individual police in Ferguson are "monsters". The problems seem to stem from some individuals, their leadership, and how they behave en masse. Perhaps they are not monsters so much as ill-disciplined, or badly trained. On the other hand, if they were racist monsters, all of the events you describe might well take place just the same. The real problem is generalization. You cannot judge all the police by the action of some, either in pointing assault weapons at protesters,  firing gas canisters at the media, or, finding missing children. You can however judge the leadership of the force as a whole.

No police officer has an easy job, but everything that causes people to doubt or suspect police anywhere hurts other police everywhere.  An unarmed person killed leads others to fear the police, and to consider striking first out of fear. So police who had nothing to do with the Michael Brown case are put at additional risk. That is why the protocol for any officer involved shooting includes as much transparency as is manageable. Managing information for maximal Public Relations value breeds mistrust.
