Description
New 5th edition D&D came out. Still haven't gotten my hands on it but it has spawned a lot of talk about the good old days. The first time I ever played, I had ZERO knowledge of D&D and was just kind of tossed into a game as a level 10 wizard. The DM told me I had a spell book given to me by my teacher. We were in a 10x10 room with a bunch of kobolds flooding in through a doorway. I held my action and let the others fight while I tried to figure out the basics. The GM looked at me and said, "They are going to need your wizard's help to take out this many enemies. What are you going to do?" I looked at my list of spells going by name alone and said, "I'll start casting fireball." All the players went wide eyed and he said, "Ok, everyone roll your wisdom or intelligence, whichever is higher." and we did. I failed, everyone else passed. He said, "The mage starts to incant the words to Fireball, what do you all do?One of them jumped into a magic well in the middle of the room, another jumped out of a window. The warrior collapsed into a ball with his shield on top of him giving the Kobolds a chance to dog pile him. The Rogue leaped back through the doorway we came and kicked the door closed. Then my spell went off in a 10x10 library full of old, dry, books on necromancy, containing barrels of sealing wax, oil and ink.
The GM said that the God of the cleric granted mercy on the innocent and I was allowed to live with 1 hit point, but severely burned. The resulting explosions from the oil and burning everything, in the confined space blasted down the hallway killing the kobolds, the guy controlling the kobolds, setting the necromantic tome we were sent to destroy on fire and we all got melted treasure as a reward...
After that they gave me a new mage who had actually graduated magic school to play in the next game.
