I noticed the concept of this before I really took into account how you'd executed it and I found myself looking for something a little lighter and more traditional...I hope that makes some sense. However on closer look, and especially at full view, this is a really impressive piece of work, even more so for its originality. The flesh tones against the black seem to compliment each other nicely and there's just the right amount of distance between the two, not too much either as that would create useless empty space, but a constructive distance, which is great.
I would say only this: there is a line of light on the right arm as I'm looking at the screen and it detracts just a tiny bit from the picture. It looks to me like a flash reflection or something and the fingertip of the other hand has a little flash bounce on it, if you were do to this again it might be an idea to just watch out for that.
The positioning of the hands is fanastic, but the one reaching up looks a lot more natural in pose than the one reaching down e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s⦠" width="15" height="15" alt="

Thank you very much for the input!, It always feels great to receive such compliments!.
I agree with you 100% when it comes to the flash on the right hand, I was rather new to all of this when I made this image and decided at the time that this was as good as it would get! lol.
I am glad that this has remained as one of my popular photo's, and I am very glad that you liked it.
Thank you again for the critique, I very much appreciate it

to be honest I started this off with something completely different in mind.
at one point this had over 5 hands in it.... one hand was reaching for the hand above and was being held down by all of the other hands.
in the end I decided to simplify it and I ended with this.
And I do see the resemblance to the Michelangelo painting you are speaking of!.
Thank you for the comment!

Beauty in simplicty. This is a perfect example of that. I like the depth of the picture because if you stare at it for a few moments you seem to get lost in the blackness that seems to never end
I love the atmosphere of it as well since it can be both a depressing or optimistc picture.
A picture that really lets the viewer decide what its about
Excellent work

Thank you!, such a great comment to receive!
This is definitely an image that I wanted people to be able to look at and come up with their own story for, I believe all good art lets people do that, to hear that something I made has that effect makes me happy.
And I must say, I love your myth busters quote!! lol

I am absolutely in love with the lighting you used for this image. I find the symmetry to be a perfect cohesion of flesh mixed with the darkness beyond. I find the shadows in the wrinkles of the hands stunning in their darkness. My only negative remark would be the highlight in the arm on the right seems a little too high in contrast with the rest of the image.

This is just beautiful! I really like how the bottom hand is reaching. The black background give more mysterious feelings of what may have happened! Very nice!

thanks!
I always love looking at this picture and thinking back on how the photos of the hands were taken in a fully light room lol.
It's funny how far a tiny bit of editing can go!
