Description It's an amazing book. I don't know how I feel about the picture. but oh well! it's over and out of my head! I didn't think that I'd finish this, but this is how it started out:

This is amazing.
You depicted the Oryx and Crake wonderfully and Crake actually looks like how Margaret describes the 'Crakers', all tan with green eyes as they're supposed to look like since they're modeled after him
I love it

I always pictured Crake as more a young snape with a normal sized nose. But this is cool.
Oryx is perfect.

really??? I always pictured him as...Handsome, eerily so. His description is tanned, I remember that- and I was actually a bit surprised about that, too. I think I wanted to depict both of them as almost perfect, but also I wanted the whole thing to be ominous. Thank you for the comment!

Aww, it's a great picture but i still hate that Snowman seems to get no love from the O&C fan community- small as it may be.

aw, thank you! Yeah, I wanted to draw a picture of him surrounded by Crakers, but I never really got around to it...I had a very distinct picture in my head that was very difficult to achieve...

strangely enough, Jimmy and Snowman (I view them almost as separate identities so I don't really say jimmy/snowman- sorry if that's weird) are the only characters whom I can properly visualise from the novel- I'm considering making an Oryx and Crake my little pony.

So there does exist some decent art pieces of Oryx and Crake!

I agree with a comment above; Crake's hand tangled in her hair is a nice touch, it truly highlights his possessiveness of her. Though color me a hint confused as to why he's stroking the wound on her throat as he did kill her himself. OH CRAKE, you fickled being.

Lovely, nonetheless. :3

thank you! I'm so happy when fans of the book like this picture. I was looking for some fanart after I read the book and I didn't find much...Atwood's writing was so moving, I had to draw something after I finished the book. I'm so glad you liked it. I think I kind of wanted to portray his sick fascination with Oryx as well as put the gross, graphic truth in the picture with the wound on her neck. He's stroking the wound because it was all in his beloved plan, and he loved what Oryx was going to become for him- her transformation is made tangible by the neck wound, y'know?

I've read Oryx and Crake for my English class a few months ago :] I gotta say, I liked that book.

Ah, the wound on Oryx's neck keeps reminding me of their death scenes.

But anyways, beautiful picture! Awesome idea to depict their "Adam and Eve" role in the book<3

And now that I've finally finished the book, I feel I can actually comment on this.

...But of course, now that I do understand it all, I find I have no words. But I shall try.

This is just...so perfect. I love the halos around their heads, like the pictures of the saints in old illuminated manuscripts, and how they both just seem to glow. They're precisely how I pictured Oryx and Crake in the book--I look at this, and something in me just says yes, this is them. The intensity of Crake's expression, and how his hand is tangled in her hair speaks of that possessive mine way that Atwood mentioned he had about Oryx, are just so right, and she looks so calm and benevolent despite the awful wound on her neck: it's a vision of them as Snowman has painted them for the Crakers.

Stunning work.

oh you read it!! I know what you mean, the book leaves you utterly breathless and eerily disturbed because you're almost unsure of what you've just read. Snowman is so incredibly human, so pitiable, but also so despicable- I adore her writing style, I want to devour all of her stuff. I'm so happy you've read it, because your comment means so much more because you understand what I was trying to acheive-thank you, dear!!

I'm thinking... you said that the girl was originally a skeleton, right?

Is it perhaps the story of a skeleton princess who has to collect bones to fill a cave(because that's a story that I heard a very long time ago, and I can't remember the details, aside from a statue that ate your fingers if you didn't tell the truth, and yeah, I was wondering if it was this story perhaps...)?

plumfit In reply to TheraHedwig [2007-09-30 23:01:34 +0000 UTC]

ohhh, no no no, she was just constantly described as delicate and thin, breakable, I guess, but in my artist's comments, I wrote that I anatomically screwed her up or something because she looks like a skeleton, lol

Wait, is the book called Oryx and Crake? I think you did a really good job with the highlights and anatomy. I like how their skin tones are different too but that would have been something I would have overlooked and just made them both the same.

plumfit In reply to tiffanybell [2007-09-12 19:11:25 +0000 UTC]

yes! have you read it? ohh, yeah, I wanted a clear difference in skin tone- hers cool, his warm. did you notice the neck? gross. I had to point it out, because I think I made it too subtle. thanks! I was practicing with anatomy and positioning, but I also wanted it to feel like adam and eve

Impressive, and while ive nvr read the Margret Atwood I can still appreciate this piece. I really like the guys eyes. They are so bright they almost glow really well done. Idk though cause i don't like the guys body so much. I like the musculature (and yes i can say that without being gay :-P) but just not the shading. I really like the chick's body but not her arms. But the faces + background + hair = ungodly Heeral drawing again. Mad props on the work
