I have an 1897 dated one that was cut down to carbine length at some point. I purchased mine strictly as a curiosity and thus enjoy it's quirky weirdness, but of all my guns it's got to be the last one I'd want in any sort of "serious" situation.

This is a good looking gun but, and correct me if I'm wrong but, wasn't this gun, relatively speaking, a piece of crap? Compared to other bolt-actions of the day, the stripper clip feeder was easily breakable compared to others, required comparatively high maintenance and over longer distances had rather terrible accuracy.
As I said before, correct me if I am wrong.
I know more of the post-World War II weapons than most others. And among those used in world war II, those used by italians and japanese are those I know the least.

Well, It was taken due to the Type of ammos (Round ammos, Very precise) and Due to his price (12-15 Dollars at the time.)

Of all the bolt actions I own, this would be definitely a step below them. The en bloc charging clip is a royal pain in the arse. Simple fixed sights are not that good either. Bolt is quite smooth. They are however easy to clean and should be relatively reliable as long as the charging clips are good.

The Garand used a charging clip as well, and I never hear of any complaints about that. Most of the derogatory comments about Italian weapons seem to have a racist component to them, IMO. The Carcano is a MAUSER with a Mannlicher feed system, nothing more, nothing less.

* The original Carcano clips were I believe brass and made for only one operation.

The Carcano charging clips are quite poor compared to the Garand. They are made of significantly thinner stamped steel.
I would definitely challenge the assumption that a Carcano is a Mauser with a mannlicher feed system, too many differences.
It is not a "bad" gun persay, but it does have some definate disadvantages to other contemporary rifles of the time.

Many of these rifles are so nice looking... this is another example...
