I've started a tree-shade image a few times but the render times for the leaf shadows seemed high.

It depends on which render engine you are using... for example, tons of polygons (representing each leaf as mesh) isn't a big problem for Octane, but using transparency maps (for entire twig with leaves, as most of models) dramatically slows down rendering process
