Description A study of my characters (left to right) Todor, Poharex and Eperok, in a style imitating that of Walt Disney's "Fantasia"- one of my favorite films since childhood and an undying source of inspiration for me to this day. The desert background is ripped directly from the film.

That’s exactly what we used to depict it as. Just over a century ago, Hell Creek produced the world’s very first T. rex. The skeleton, uncovered by fossil collector Barnum Brown, was far from complete. But enough bone was left to put together a prehistoric nightmare.

It was named “Tyrannosaurus rex” or “Tyrant Lizard King”.

And when it was put together and mounted in the museum, it was built just like the reptilian model they expected it to fit. They stood it up, put its tail down on the floor, got its head waaay up in the air, made it look about as mean as it could be.

That kind of was the point. It's retro paleoart, 1940s style specifically.

Also, as memory serves Tyrannosaurus rex wasn't the first name of the species- that would be Manospondylus gigas.

Imagine what "scientifically-accurate" depictions of dinosaurs may look like a century from now. To a person of the late 20th or early 21st century, they could appear entirely alien.

According to a new documentary i just watched, the real T. rex had melanin skin, orange eyebrows, a tufty mane of hair like a lion, and it didn’t roar.

I wonder just how much of that depiction was backed up by evidence and how much was artistic liberty.

Ahh yes...the desert migration scene, most herbivores and carnivores survive in the harsh badlands

Poharex In reply to Syfyman2XXX [2017-09-27 18:23:22 +0000 UTC]

Not surprising, since Don Bluth used to work for Disney and his style was more than likely influenced by early Disney films like Fantasia.
I did consider also making a more strictly Bluth-inspired character study at some point, though his style in LBT is going to be much more difficult to replicate.
