Having worn body armor in the dessert, I can tell you many of us would gladly have dumped all the shit the army made us carry. Water, weapon and ammo would've been just lovely. Not sure I'd've worn a bikini though

Um Qasr, Iraq in '05. Very dusty. Though to be fair, Lashkar Gah, Afghanistan in '08 was quite a bit greener and Camp Bastion was all concrete and plywood.

Because it's not really about dying for your country. For me it was about having fun, making some great friends, getting to blow shit up and being paid for it. Patriotic martyrdom just doesn't come into it. It's twee sentiment pedalled by idiots.
Losing friends in a contact is no different than losing them in a car crash or a suicide. You mourn them, you miss them, but ultimately you remember them and move on.
