Hello folks !It's been a while I had this tutorial in mind ! It's not as complete as I wanted to, but I think it's still a good base to play with !
So if you've practiced the basics and want to have a character to put in action , here's for you !
If you want to see how I use these techniques, you can see an example here !
Hope it will be useful !

After reading your tutorials (and since you mentioned the size of the iris in this particular deviant), I've been wondering what were your thoughts on the iris that dilates and shrinks on the same character, depending on their mood. This is very visible in anime/manga where a character's iris becomes almost a dot when they're crazy/surprised and it dilates when they're normal/crying/something-similar. What I'm actually wondering is if you believe it's a good or a bad way to show emotions or a character's mood through the size of the iris and pupil. I'm aware that body languages is very precious at this type of situation, but I quite like the way the iris may represent something deeper within the character.

That's a very good question.
Realistically speaking, you shouldn't use it since, even if it's a natural and existing mechanic, it's too small&subtle to be observed. They kinda abuse it in anime/manga, but I understand why :
Since it produces such an impact on the viewer even in real life (I've read about studies that, for example, declares a person much more attractive when they have their pupils dilated) I think you should use if your goal is to produce an impact or an emotion on your viewer. Of course, you ought to use it among all the other body language, but when you don't have much more to express (like I did here ) it's a phenomenon you can't just ignore, and there's no shame in taking advantage of it
So my advice is : Use it, but keep it subtle !

Although I am very likely to leave my drawing to an unpracticed level of doodle I still love reading these. (:
The drawings are also very cool, I love seeing "in-progress" works.
Much appreciated if I ever do bother to try drawing. P:

Character definition and the siluette is something that (even pros) seem to overlook sometimes.
It's IMO very improtant that those words describe the character's personality, not what the chracater does or the looks.
I got pitches from writes where they described their main character with "gambler who wears a hat and slays demons...with guns". That's not really a character. At least not a deep or interesting one.
It's a good tutorial. I think everyone should consider these steps.

You're right ! I also see lots of people with a good character, but their psychology is too complicated (like an elf who is sensitive after the death of her parents but still strong fighter with a witty mind, etc...) I still think that keep the profession (bounty hunter, soldier or even demon slayer !) in the three words can be useful, because your work is often related to your psychology ^^
And thanks ! I'm glad you like it ^^
