Description
(just MAY want to click on image so you can read the darn thing Note: IF you want to get better, as you know, practicing is everything. ESPECIALLY practicing when you don't feel like drawing.
Just ask my former apprentice! She did this for three months straight and even though it was hard work, it greatly paid off! I am VERY proud of her!!!
I challenge you to do this for one week. I want you to do ten pages of nothing BUT drills. And you AT LEAST have to have 5 drills on each page (and thats the front AND the back of the page, so at least 10 total "per page").
Side Note ~ I had to personally do this for three years straight at my art college and it was 30 pages a week! (so no whinning )
Go out to a public place (like a mall or something) and draw people as they pass on by. Draw your family, your friends, wherever there are people! And see how long it takes you to draw them. Ideally you want to practice enough where you can start to draw people in 60 seconds or less in drill form. Now there is a reason to all this hard work. Drawing isn't JUST about having the head knowledge. ANYONE can be told how to draw. It's about getting the "muscle knowledge"...it's the same reason a basketball player practices the same shot a thousand times over. He's training his muscles to remember the precise amount of strength they need to use to make that shot at that certain place. We too need to train like this to get good! If you have any questions feel free to ask my friends!
GOOD LUCK!!!

Yes, just keep building it outwards (as it were). After laying down the drill try to add a simple muscle structure to see it your drill works. This way you will start to get a feel if your drills are properly proportionate. Afterwards you can start getting more detailed (clothes, weapons, face, hair, etc). Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions!

Gotta say, this sounds like a pretty good exercise to try. (plus, I've never really seen hooked stick figures before)
So basically just go to a public place, pick a victim, and get a stick/rough figure drawn out of 'em?

Dang, I could probably use this. I have a basic understanding of anatomy (though I can't draw hands or feet lol ), but I am horrible with coming up with different poses, especially action ones . I need to get some motivation to get back into drawing again.

lol Good try, but...meh, you just aren't as threatening as my coaches or my tae kwon do instructors lol. Now they can get anyone to move But since you're insisting on it, I'll start doing some drawing exercises again now that I have some down time.

Heh, few and rather spontaneous I need to work on my motivation level; it's been extremely low recently...But I do doodle some little sketches on the sides of my notes during classes...do those count?

eh...sadly, not really. The actual 50% these drills help teach you is to be able to draw ESPECIALLY when you don't feel like it. It's kinda like a runner getting a second wind...once you learn to push through it enough times you can draw even when you don't feel like it. Like right now for me...I may have an artist block, but I'm still drawing for this project no problem. It does suck at times...but these drills do help in many different ways!

Heh, that makes sense. I was a bit of a hard-core athlete once - thinking of it in those terms makes sense. All righty, I'm going to have to start pulling myself together if I'm ever gonna get better at drawing
Thanks for the advice

wow, this helps despite the fact that ive been doing drills for years now. its not been explained in such simple terms... out of any tutorials ive previously used anyway. thanks a bunch

IMAGINeye In reply to Jerricco [2007-12-15 23:00:40 +0000 UTC]
That is a HUGE compliment...thank you! Drills SHOULD be easy...once you get the hang of it and start to notice body composition and keeping things proportionate, it just suddenly clicks! It's kinda like making a cake (as it were) You don't start off with all the detailed frosting and then shove all the sponge you just cooked into that frosting to make a cake...you start off with the basics AND THEN move on to the details! And I should add the VERY LAST THING you draw is the head! (because you want to make the head proportionate to the body, not the body proportionate to the head
)

Eh...
I don't draw people.
I stick to drawing very close to nothing. But if I do draw, it's just shapes and things.
I'm more of a photographer, but lately, it's been mainly writing for me....
