Description
My entry to 's Shard the Metal Sonic x Nicole the Holo-Lynx contest, with the theme "Summer". I tried to put a creative spin on it and also practice my complex skies and my multiply/lighten layers in Photoshop. Watching a movie in the park with other robot Mobians under a bountiful sunset is about as nice a summer activity as there is, I think! I like the concept of an outdoor movie theatre for a summer themed image. The colours of the sunset sky in the background give it a soft romantic feel.
One thing that doesn't work for me is the sparkle of electricity btween the two kissing characters. I find that it makes the image feel a little messy and busy. With their position, it seems these two characters are supposed to be the main point of interest for this image. However, to me, the business means there isn't a spot for the eye to rest on them.
One thing that might help unify the kissing couple with the romantic sunset background is to choose a slightly warmer highlight colour for these two characters, instead of just a lighter colour. I notice that with the three sitting figures in the distance, since they are already warm colours, their highlights automaticaly look warmer. They feel like they belong with the sunset. The kissing couple are neutral colours, especially the grey hedgehog, so intentionally adding some warmth to the highlights would go a long way - especially with the grey hedgehog who blends in with the colour of the ground.
I see that you've chosen to highlight the faces of the couple with the cool blue light of the sparks. Although I understand why you did that, it is another thing that separates the couple from the rest of the image. Rather than being a point of interest in the image, it feels as if they are competing with the rest of the image for attention.
Overall, I like your concept. I think with a few tweaks, it could have more of a sense of unity, which would take it to the next leve.

As with most of your works, this one is pretty good. I like the scenario that's going on here. It appears that they're watching some kind of movie on a big screen, and what cracks me up is the yellow and orange ones together. I don't know why, but I think their poses look funny. Not in a bad way, but in a good way. As with most of your works, the coloring is decent. However, I think the ground's color is a bit too simple. Maybe add some texture to the ground next time. Cause what I'm seeing is that it looks like they're sitting on some...land of clay?
I think you did a good job with the shading, as well as the background-foreground contrast. (I think that's what you call it.) It really tells the audience what you're supposed to be focusing on. Now, the only thing I would criticize would be the sky. Don't worry. I think it's great, but maybe a bit more color should've been put in it. How do I put it? Um...part of some areas around certain dark clouds look like they were unfinished. Also, probably don't put too many small things in varying colors on the background, as it's really distracting. Perhaps put in a few colors only and blend it together.
Anyway, this is still pretty good. Keep up the good work.

What do you mean by small things of varying colors? Like, the robot Mobians? I didn't want them to all be purple or whatever since that would make them hard to tell apart, but I went for warm colors anyway.

This is so, so creative haha! I absolutely love the approach you took with this, everything about it is just so unique. Β The atmosphere, the other robians, the movie even, everything about the theme is just perfectly executed. Β The interaction between Shard and Nicole is perfect and sweet, and I can't help but snicker a little bit at their expressions! Β The sparks are a great detail!
