Description Quebec Scene Version 2.0! lol

So here's the updated version of my previous Quebec Scene [link]

It's now all my models, textures, etc. My favourite are the two new buildings i modeled that are upfront

some critiques would be nice as i'm fixing them up now.
some critiques i got: lighten up the black shadows and create more fall off for the lights

What do you think? It's still a low poly scene, (only 26,000 tris for the whole thing )

Before anyone asks, the glow is done with alpha maps, NOT the glow setting in Maya. I don't use it, never will. lol

If you're wondering why the sky is light, the buildings are dark, look at 'golden hour' or 'magic hour' reference images. There's a part during the sunset where the sky will be multicoloured and no longer lighting up buildings but the street lights and windows themselves. that is what i'm trying to capture. Good, bad?

comments?
all buildings modeled, textured, rendered, etc in Maya 2009 and done by me, Mune.

wow, this is beautiful! I love it when I see people working well with shadows, it's something I want to learn. Best of learning to look at other people;s work. I really love this scene, it's very peaceful in the still of the night. I can't really say anything about modelling and 3D work since I don't know anything about them. But when I closely look at the shadows, everything seems right, except the one cast from the middle streetlight. It casts on the side of the house on the right, but why is the house on the left dark there? It should have a light cast from the streetlight. Instead, the front of the house on the left is lit up. Which seems too much for it to be coming from the streetlamp on the left, what with the distance to that.
don't know if that was helpful, hope it is. Never mind the shadows though, I like it a lot regardless

Wow this looks amazing, there is so much detail in the texture of the bricks and the lighting looks very realistic casting shadows and highlights over the scene.

3D has always been a strength, but i still got a ton to learn. i'm really glad it pulled off the realistic look though and that you can see it. (took about 2 months or so off and on)

The one thing the entire scene is lacking and is in fact there. Is that when a sky has any kind of light even at night there is an ambient lighting created by the sky. It will certainly eliminate the shadows, and setting the lightsource to the color of the sky will increase the realism =]!

PolyMune In reply to SythenDesigns [2011-02-08 20:44:07 +0000 UTC]

but i'll definitely try what you suggested! it bugs me a bit, still. lol. if it fixes my issue with it, i'll be really happy! just something always bugged me about it.

PolyMune In reply to SythenDesigns [2011-02-08 20:39:14 +0000 UTC]

actually, that's not the case.
look up magic hour, it happens just at sunset, where the sky has 'some' light ish, but nothing is rolling off the building. This is indeed an exact replica of what happens during this 'magic hour' its why it's called that.

it's an exact moment in time. i do however think the black may be a tad too much, so i agree with you there. But it's a simulated scene of time. purposeful.

look how dark they are, in comparison to the sky.

it's a tricky hour to replicate, i think i'll play with the lighting in the future like you suggested! thanks a bundle!

thanks so much!

it honestly reminds me of watching how people normal making video games or animate movies.
this scene is also quite peaceful.

Y-you created this?modeled? WOW eehhHhhh??? *_______*
This is so beautiful! I don't know much about 3D models like this so I can't give any helpful critiques, I'm sorry :[
But I think this is amazing! It has a calm feeling on it and I love the sky here. The angle from which the building was taken(?) is good too.

PolyMune In reply to Kohaya7Koizu [2011-01-12 02:07:45 +0000 UTC]

Why thank you very much for the fav and sweet comment!
Yes, i modeled this and textured (coloured) it in Maya/photoshop. Then i used the camera in Maya to put it at a certain angle.

i'm very happy you like the angle! Thanks for the wonderful comment!

There's a whole lot of warping of the texture on the corner building, but the others seem fine. Looks good

enmirii [2010-04-22 02:19:59 +0000 UTC]

I like this rendering better. It has more of a dramatic feel. Love the use of shadows and light. The sky is also a plus. The other render was nice, but it looked a bit dreary. I liked the building accents on the last render and wish that they would have made it to this one. They gave the scene more character. Without them it could be nearly any street corner.

what do u mean by the building accents?

The window decorations, like the flower boxes and the door covers. Things like that.

PolyMune In reply to enmirii [2010-04-26 05:05:41 +0000 UTC]

oh i see what you mean! well i do plan on tweaking the textures in this piece, and cutting back the use of polys. i think i shall add them back (those were actually designed by my partner when i first did the project it was a group project. if you look closely to the updated shot i have uploaded more clearer lighting, some of the doors do have shades) however! i agree! i also want to stick a tree there too

lol i'm never completely happy with this scene, so there's still room for edits.
