Description
From the moment the list of events came up for the school’s Olympics, she knew exactly what she would be signing up for;The Balloon Pop Relay Race!
Of course this had NOTHING to do with her ‘thing’ for balloons, oh no! It was just that she was the best trained for such an event; she had been, after all, the best at such races in junior high school, and even in her elementary school . . .
Well… SECOND best in elementary school.
But that skinny girl from the back row could pop balloons faster than ANYBODY, so . . .
Anyway, barring that a certain old rival in balloon-squishing would somehow transfer to her high school in the next two weeks and end up in a rival class for the Olympics, SHE was the best choice for her class in this event!
And the most important thing about such events, was the training!
With her mother working late all month, and her father out of town on a business trip, she had the house pretty much to herself, which made it the perfect place to practice. And so long as she had all the bits of rubber cleaned up before her mother got home and nagged her about the “mess”, neither would suspect a thing.
Now it was important to note, one of the problems in facing a Balloon Pop Relay Race was that the people setting up such events often like to make things more difficult for the participants by including little things that make popping the balloons much harder; underinflating the balloons, using much bigger sized balloons, or even oddly shaped balloons, increased the challenge immensely.
She was pretty sure that they would NOT be using twisty or long balloons, as use of those often ended up causing the race to go on longer than the school would like; a two hour junior high session being an example she herself had taken part in. So that left large, and/or underinflated.
Oh! Or helium! She had not thought of it before, but sit-popping helium balloons would be difficult too, what with them always floating around. Trying to keep a bunch of floating balloons tethered, while also holding them down on a chair long enough to sit on them, and make them go bang, certainly sounded like it would add to the challenge . . . And fun!
Fortunately the helium tank in the garage still had plenty left; definitely enough for two fun-filled weeks of balloon popping practice. With that, and the bag of leftover balloons she had squirreled away in her closet, AND the extra-large balloons she had ordered a month ago finally arriving, she was ready to go!
Of course she had not ordered those large balloons for ‘practice’ really, but since they were there . . .
Preparation took a rather long time, but mostly because she was taking her time in choosing which balloons to use for training today, and which to use for um . . . other things later. For now she inflated one of each color of the large balloons she had, taking great care to make sure they were NOT fully inflated, so they would require extra effort to burst. The regular balloons she blew up until they were fully inflated; no more, and no less.
It took her less than five minutes to change into her “sport” outfit, complete with her lucky “909” P.E. top, which she planned on wearing to the school Olympics as a matter or principal. On a whim though, she took off her tennis shoes, just to make popping the balloons with her feet (Which while not unheard of, was not the norm for balloon popping races.) less likely.
Grabbing the big green helium balloon, which was the nearest of the BIG balloons to her, she hit the reset timer on her wristwatch, setting it to its “stopwatch” function, and sat roughly upon the balloon, squishing it to the floor.
Suddenly, instead of pressing the ‘start’ button on her watch, she stopped and tested the big balloon. It was certainly squishy, and not yet about to pop, but . . . She could still pop it easily, even in its not-quite-fully-inflated state. Where was the challenge in that? And she had waited quite a while for these bigger balloons; she should at least make it a little more difficult to pop them, than just underinflating them . . .
A light bulb could almost be seen glowing above her head, as a smile crossed her face.
Grabbing several of the smaller balloons she placed one under each of her feet, before letting her hands up off of the floor, the result being that she was now balanced on three balloons; one big, and two small. Her sock-covered feet indented the other balloons, and her bloomers squished straight into the big green one still underneath her, but her weight was no so distributed that she was not yet able to pop any of them.
Yet.
Not even letting go of the third small balloon in her hand, she quickly pressed the “start” button on her watch, and began riding all three balloons at the same time!
With a few wobbles, she began keeping her balance, as she tried to burst the big green balloon stretching, and contorting underneath her body. Having the other two balloons keeping her from putting her full weight into it, was making it more difficult to pop the balloon.
Difficult, but not impossible.
POP!!!
Green scraps of rubber whipped her slightly on her behind, and the string she had tied to the balloon actually flew in such a way that it wrapped itself around her left leg, as she was sent cheering to the floor! A brief lifting and stomping of her legs managed to pop the smaller balloon that had been under her left foot with a BANG, but the one that had been on her right ended up being flung half-way across the room by the force of her sock-covered heel.
“You’re not getting away from me!” she giggled, as she bounded up to her feet, and did a bottom-first drop right on top of the runaway balloon.
POW!
Clicking the “off” button on her stopwatch, she looked at her popping time, for the first three balloons.
45 seconds.
“Feh!” she snorted, clicking the reset button. “I can do MUCH better than that!”
And with that, she grabbed another of the large balloons, in order to prove herself right.
The day of the actual Olympics, and the Balloon Pop Relay, had turned out to be a disappointment.
Oh, she won the race; she got the gold medal in fact. But the ‘trick’ that whoever had set up the race had done was to inflate the balloons so much, that they could have (And some did.) pop before the racers could even get to the chairs to pop them; and pops that were not through sitting did not count. She had quite literally gone through her team’s batch of balloons, before her opponents could even get half of their own balloons safely to the chairs. The other team’s participants were so scared of the balloons popping because of how tightly inflated they were, that some of them were too scared to even sit on them.
But the girl could not help but feel unfulfilled after the race. She had gone through so much training, with so many balloons (And another order of large balloons was in the mail right now, as she was all out.), for a race that was over way too soon! Although proud of her victory, she still was wishing for a real challenge.
And oddly enough the following week a certain used-to-be-rather-skinny girl who used to sit in the back row of a certain elementary school, showed up as a transfer student . . .
The End?

This story kind of got a little out of my control, after I wrote the first couple of paragraphs. I have no idea where to go with this beyond here, but I left it in a cliffhanger anyway...
Seriously, I do not know if/when I would do something else for this story line, as the picture was actually one I had on my computer for almost a year now, which I only got to coloring last month, and finished just now.
Anyway, sorry for not posting up anything else recently; I have been busy cleaning my house, so I did not have a lot of energy or free time. Plus it is summer, and the place where I work at is very busy right now.
I hope everyone enjoys this, regardless.
