So, this is how I make my bases (as you can see from the title).If it's confusing at all or you have any extra questions, please just post them as comments; I'll be happy to help!

Ok i have some screenshots and i tried to do what you do but my hand is not steady 
If i get it right i will probaly do it in greys because it makes it look like a base not a hafe finnished thing

If you use the curved line tool like I do, you shouldn't need a steady hand (Celestia knows I don't have one. If you're using the pencil tool or the paint one, it can lead to problems. And don't worry if it's a little off, it's hard to tell in the end.
