Description Another photo study, from a photo my mum took on holiday in Australia: ponycool42.deviantart.com/art/…  Time: 2 hours 30 mins.
For the monthly challenge 'trees' for this group: speedpaintstudies.deviantart.c…
I currently have a Wacom Intuos on loan and so this was partially done while I was playing around with that. So I got a bit distracted and I'm not very pleased with the final results. I think the large shapes got quite distorted and I didn't capture the texture of the tree as much as I would've liked. But ah well, the next one will be better.

I've been out of the speedpaint study group for a while, but now looking at your gallery it's so nice to see how your studies get better. This one is the best example. It has great realism and some of this mixed painterly-graphical style of yours.
The only thing I can think of to give some constructive critique is that those thick black contour lines that give this nice graphical stylization should get thinner/fade with the distance, yet the left middleground tree bark has the thickest and super dark contours. And it also unnecessarily grabs the attention of the viewer. So maybe the line weight is something you should keep an eye for

Thank you very much for your comment. I love your description of my style as 'graphical-painterly', it sums up very well what I admire in others' art and try to achieve in my own.

You're right about the focal point being thrown off by the thicker/darker lines to the left. Line weight/edge control in one of those things I've only very recently become aware of, and it's definitely an area I want to improve on.

That was one of my favourite parts of the original photo, so I'm happy to hear you like how I painted it!

Thank you! Sometimes there is just one subject you can't get enough of - that's me with horses, so I understand your friend.

Do you have join.me? That'd bring in a ton of people, they'd see your technique.

No, I don't, I never really thought that anyone would want to see it. Maybe I should try it sometime though, it could be fun (though a little intimidating to know that other people were watching me draw!).

Good one! That's a pity that you didn't submit it for the actual challenge folder. It would have been a good reference for sure.
