Description     A trio of Atrox Sapient siblings is engaging in a reckless beachside activity: they are hunting Sea Cock. The quickest of the three plunges a crude bone spear into an adult Sea Cock's back, attempting the pulverize the spine and paralyze the beast before its reinforced skull can knock him to his feet. Meanwhile his sister attempts to drag off the disemboweled calf, which cries desperately for its mother. The general chaos has disrupted a pair of Phoques, who flail their whips in irritation as they retreat to the waters. Sea Cocks are deadly prey, massive, thick-skinned, and temperamental. The oldest of the three, not willing to risk injury, assesses the situation with a weary, disappointed air. The expected outcome is that the mother Sea Cock will throw her assailant off before he can wound her fatally and chase their sister from the dying calf. They will then have to wait hours, perhaps days, until the dedicated mother abandons the soon-to-be carcass of her calf and allows them to feed. He of course wanted to take down a Phoque, which would have been much easier and allowed them to feed quickly, but his siblings had other plans. Atrox Sapients have the strange and often detrimental urge to hit things with sticks. They know that they will not be able to take the cock down, and they do not care so long as they get to screech and attack things.

Sea Cocks, aka Muck Dicks, Phallus Seals, Mermaids, Phoques, or instant unwatches on this site, are a family of large, endothermic, aquatic wyrms notable for, well... it's in the name. Unlike most wyrms, which are sluggish, cold-blooded, predominately carnivorous, and terrestrial, the Sea Cocks are specialized for a life at sea. Their skin is thick and smooth, shielding lairs of tightly packed fat and powerful muscle. Their tails have broadened into paddles which, unlike the pinnipeds they resemble, bear no traces of former limbs. Curiously, the forelimbs have remained quite close to their ancestral form, even while the tail has become a fully developed fluke in some species. This is most likely due to the fact that Sea Cocks must breed on land and flat, soft beaches are in rare supply. Instead, the cocks must clamber over rock piles and small cliffs along the shore to haul out. In colder climbs they rest atop icebergs and along frozen beaches. But rarely is there much distinction between the beach and the shore, the two intertwined by semisolid algae flats stretching for miles on end. Rocky islands pushing past the oozing surface are the cocks' preferred resting spots and are usually covered in one species or another, especially on warm, sunny days. It is worth noting that Sea Cocks are not commonly found in open waters. Instead, they stick to the coasts, occupying water that is not thick and muddy like the outer flats but not clear like the open sea. It is a nutrient-rich, broth-esque hellscape of pale, writhing things and festering algae, the seafloor brown and stinking with decay and hairlike aquatic fungi. Depending on the kind of algae most common in the water, it can be a vibrant neon green or a deep crimson, though the bottom muck is always brown and grey and writhing with legions of worms and formless things even older and more degenerate than the worms.
The Sea Cocks' preference for these murky waters comes from a number of factors, most importantly that this habitat is rich in the algae, carrion, and small animals they feed on. It is also shallow enough to serve as a nursery for pups, dense enough to deter large, fast moving open water predators, and owing to the cocks' ancestral love for mud and darkness, far more comforting in an inexplicable (to them) way. They have few threats here: the giant worms and wyrms living in the seafloor prefer proportionately small prey which they find burrowed in the sediment. Likewise, the various buoyant, surface-dwelling snail-like forms, though capable of growing quite large, usually target smaller, less powerful prey, though the big ones do take pups and small species of cock on occasion. Leviathios, that great anvil-backed serpent of the southern waters, will regularly snatch up unattended pups as well as adults of smaller species. Its thin, beak-like jaws, however, are poor at subduing more robust victims, and so the biggest species of cock are left unbothered as they forage.
Cocks are omnivorous and tend to have short, robust radulae that allow them to suck and mop up soft organic matter at their leisure. There are three predominant forms of Sea Cock, each distinguished by both anatomy and foraging habits:

    Whip-Cocks:

More commonly known as Phoques. These generally reach sizes comparable to sea lions, but exceptional individuals of the northern variety grow close to 6,000 pounds in weight. Phoques are usually dark grey or black in color, with long, tubular bodies and whale-like flukes. They live in hordes numbering in the thousands and make annual migrations from the warm southern waters to the nutrient-rich northern seas. Despite lacking visible eyes, their dorsums are covered in photoreceptors that allow them to track the light (and thus the algae they feed on). Phoques are bioluminescent, lighting up a series of thin, multicolored stripes along their flanks at night. These allow them to keep track of each other as well as confuse predators.  Encountered at night, a Phoque horde is an overwhelming mass of glittering lights, with individual targets near impossible to distinguish.
Phoques spend their summers on the rocky northern coastlines, where they haul out at night to sleep. They are actually safer in their turbulent, freezing-cold feeding grounds and are forced to land by necessity, being unable to sleep in the savage waters. For on land, they are constantly stalked by Drumjawws, who are more than capable of splitting even the largest bull open with their killing tendrils. Phoques make up almost 50% of the diet of coastal Drumjaww populations as well as being infrequent targets of terrestrial wyrms and Atrox Sapients. In accordance with this danger, they are the most well-defended of the Sea Cocks. Hence their alternate name, each Phoque is armed with a single, two-meter-long whip, a former sensory organ fashioned into a powerful weapon by millions of years of evolution. Though it is still quite tactile and useful in locating hidden patches of food and snagging small prey, the whip's primary purpose is for bitchslapping any Drumjaww stupid enough to attack head-on, as well as chasing away rivals from a preferred spot on the beach. Despite its rubbery texture and thin appearance, a Phoque's whip can fatally injure even larger predators and is often lined with sharp, glass-like barbs. The Phoques themselves are often littered with scars from unfortunate run-ins with rivals, as they are all too quick to employ their deadly weapons. Phoques rarely fight much over mates, however. They are incredibly promiscuous, engaging in month-long beachside orgies as soon as they arrive at their summer pastures. The millions of pups are left to sleep on the sand, nursed infrequently by their mothers until they can join the adults at sea. Pups mature rapidly and can swim and forage at three weeks of age, though they are still quite small. By this time, however, most will have been devoured by the masses of terrestrial predators as well as their own siblings.

    Arrowheads:

(Not shown). Arrowheads are the most wormlike of the Sea Cocks. Their limbs are short and more paddlelike, and they never leave the murky shallows which they call home. Their tail is not unlike a beaver's, and their bodies are fat and wrinkled. The largest species grow no heavier than 500 pounds and may reach nine feet in length. Named for their rubbery heads, which are lined with tactile sensor cells and shaped like an arrow, the Arrowheads spend their days foraging along the seafloor. More carnivorous than their kin, they feed predominantly on small, sediment dwelling animals as well as any algae, carrion, shed skin, or feces that drift down from above. Though generally sluggish, they are capable of alarming bursts of speed when threatened. Arrowheads tend to stay close to the outer layers of the tidal flats, where they will burrow if threatened and can stay submerged for up to an hour. Despite being far less charismatic than their immense relatives, Arrowheads are fairly intelligent and care for their young (1-2 pups) for over three years before setting them off on their own. They establish territories for foraging and will squabble in frequent border disputes, and they occasionally will leap clear of the surface in order to frighten rivals and/or dislodge parasites.

    Muck Dicks:

The biggest of the Sea Cocks. Muck Dicks can grow up to 10,000 pounds in weight, though this is reserved for exceptionally large females. They are the true Sea Cocks in the sense of earning the name, for while their relatives bear only a passing resemblance, the sight of a massive, dripping black Muck Dick breaching the surface will instantly and inevitably spawn images of that great founder of pre-teen boy humor. They are omnivores and could be considered the pigs of the sea: exceptionally intelligent, morose in temperament, immense in strength, and capable of eating anything. Indeed, at the carcasses of certain immense algae-munchers and giant marine worms, it is the Muck Dicks that dominate the carcass, sloshing along the blubbery flesh and mouthing off great chunks of meat with their radulae. The sight of several dozen of these unworldly behemoths swinging their great phallic heads in messy, slithering arcs as they clamber atop a bloated corpse and gnaw voraciously at the flesh is perhaps the most disturbing their world has to offer.
Muck Dicks live in small pods numbering no more than a hundred. The main pod is loosely organized and comprised of several small families. The families share a close bond, especially those of mothers and their calves, and they are shown to prefer each other's company to that of strangers when hauling out for the night. Horrific as they are, the sight of a mother Muck Dick nuzzling her calf as it drifts off into sleep is strangely cute. They are by no means evil creatures, and in no way did they choose or want to resemble the sex organs of certain Earth primates. in fact, before there were dicks at all, there were worms resembling dicks, so in fact it would perhaps be more appropriate to compare the Muck Dicks to those worms than the genitalia that came later.
Despite the appearance, the Muck Dicks' heads are incredibly solid and powerful. The skull is heavy and domed, not unlike that of the extinct Pachycephalosaurs, and it serves a similar function. Rather than ramming into each other like popularly envisioned, males, by way of their muscular and incredibly powerful necks, slam their reinforced skulls into their opponent's flanks, bludgeoning rivals with lethal force in battles than may last several hours. Females, though abstaining from the fights over breeding rights, use their heads to defend their calves. Indeed, the females are usually the larger of the two genders, for they must not only defend themselves but their slow and vulnerable offspring, which are prime targets for dozens of aquatic predators. A well-placed blow from their bony skulls can easily pulverize an attacking Atrox Sapient, and they will not hesitate to do so.
Unlike Phoques, which have defined, extensible radulae, Muck Dicks' mouthparts have fused with their heads. Powerfully muscled, they can suck flesh right off the bone. In color Muck Dicks vary. Generally, southern populations are white or tan, while the northern varieties tend to be a solid black. They also grow much larger and tend to have thicker layers of fat. Communication is a mixture of clicking and slurping sounds. The flesh of Muck Dicks can either be a treasured delicacy or a disgusting mess depending on the time of year. In winter, when forage is poor and the dicks tend to get most of their nourishment from decaying organic matter on the seafloor, Atrox Sapients and other thinkers find the taste revolting. In summer, when food is rich and good, there is little that can beat the fat and muscle of a young Muck Dick. It is soft, supple, and sweet, with a distinctive tanginess to it. So yes, in a sense, Atrox Sapients literally eat dick.
