Description This is my first submission for the 2009 calendar year and before you start slamming me and making further gross misrepresentations in regards to this stamp about tracing and I am only neutral on the issue:

Tracing is legal under the most circumstances and dA has professional lawyers who clearly investigated the issue. They found that it's okay to do it as long as:

1. It belongs only in the Fanart category.
2. Proper credit is given to the original artist. This includes permission and linking back to the original artwork.
3. No profit is ever made out of traced imagery at all.
4. The artist who traced the drawing has no intention to claim the image as their own. Otherwise, it's considered art theft and misrepresentation.
5. The original artist doesn't object towards the said deviant who traced the image. The original artist has every right to report it to the admins if they object and have it removed.

Many professional artists do not like people who trace their art as it is considered an insult to them if it's reused elsewhere.

Please DO NOT brand deviants who trace drawings as copiers in their entirety. Copying art in its entirety can be seen as theft and misrepresentation.

Comments on this stamp are closed. The reason is that only a small percentage of users agree in a neutralised matter. Totally disagreeing with this matter on the legality of tracing is unfortunate.

I cannot stress to the fullest extent that if you are unable to deal with it, then there are other websites where you can post your artwork.

If you still have a problem with this, I suggest that you note me privately.

If you are a subscriber, you can put this in your journal or shoutboard by using : thumb112764560 : somewhere in the field.

Sorry for knowing that tracing is to be seen as the "easy" way for many lazy kids out there. Can't draw it yourself? Trace it. If that's the mentality art has these days, art has hit a lower level.

Well...you can never agree with the fact that tracing can be seen as a learning tool for certain users, but only when used in a appropriate matter. The moral of the story is that tracing can be seen as art theft unless the deviant gives proper credit to the original artist.

Then still I fail to see the use of tracing something someone else made. It's pathetic.

If deviants fail to give credit to the artist for tracing their work, they can't respect it.

I'm stopping here.

As you wish. Shame that many people don't just DRAW things themselves anymore. I'll rest with my previous statement.

ppgrainbow In reply to Xannijn [2010-01-28 21:21:13 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. If deviants can't learn how to draw without having to cheat by tracing the lines and disrespecting artists, they're not welcome on this site.

That's fair enough.

I wouldn't like my work traced : / If someone asked me I'd say no, and if someone told me and linked to my picture, I'd tell them to take it down. I think DA has failed us artists with this policy.

ppgrainbow In reply to AcheronHades [2009-10-21 17:53:57 +0000 UTC]

A lot of people wouldn't want their artwork traced at all. dA is trying to help users out regarding the policy on tracing and how to cope with it.

AcheronHades In reply to ppgrainbow [2009-10-21 18:07:25 +0000 UTC]

I guess : / If you make the tracers have to tell the artist they traced the picture, as one of the ruiles, then the artist can always ask them to take it down. But there are so many who don't tell the artist, because they don't bother reading the fine print, or because they want to claim it as their own.

ppgrainbow In reply to AcheronHades [2009-10-21 19:10:09 +0000 UTC]

Deviants who got caught tracing can always take down the traced work before they end up getting reported. It's unfair for someone to claim their lineart as their own from other artists.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AcheronHades In reply to ppgrainbow [2009-10-21 20:09:49 +0000 UTC]

Yeah : / A lot of the artists that I watch have their work traced, and have to take action.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ppgrainbow In reply to AcheronHades [2009-10-22 02:14:52 +0000 UTC]

Yep...and unfortunately, reports of artwork traced will not come out valid unless the artist provides sufficient evidence and reason why the artist doesn't want the deviant tracing their art.

A lot of people have also stated that tracing is also a valid way to learn. Although art theft, which is different is very upsetting when it happens which is why people get very angry about the subject. So i can see it both ways. But i do agree with you for the reasons you have stated it is ok

Thanks

I have also been accused of stealing art and have had art stolen so i guess i can see things from both sides and know what it feels like.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ppgrainbow In reply to Karla-Chan [2009-08-31 21:57:52 +0000 UTC]

I know how you feel. Sadly, so many people have been incredibly harsh on the accusations of art theft and it's hard to negotiate with the admins to get this issue on art theft resolved.

👍: 1 ⏩: 1

Karla-Chan In reply to ppgrainbow [2009-09-01 19:33:35 +0000 UTC]

It is not only that but they get their friends to come and have a go at you as well. So you get flamed all over your front page.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ppgrainbow In reply to Karla-Chan [2009-09-01 19:45:20 +0000 UTC]

This is why art theft allegations are taken very seriously. Flaming, if it gets severe enough could be classified as harassment and harassment is against dA policy.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Karla-Chan In reply to ppgrainbow [2009-09-01 20:29:08 +0000 UTC]

That is very true. It can be very hurtful and upsetting.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ppgrainbow In reply to Karla-Chan [2009-09-01 20:43:41 +0000 UTC]

I agree.

Flaming doesn't help the artist move away from tracing, it only hurts their ability to improve without having the ability to trace overall.

Karla-Chan In reply to ppgrainbow [2009-09-01 20:51:19 +0000 UTC]

I fully agree, and sometimes these people don't even know it is wrong, so i think talking nice to them is much better.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ppgrainbow In reply to Karla-Chan [2009-09-02 02:37:13 +0000 UTC]

That's right.

If people refuse to admit that they traced someone's artwork, they won't learn a lesson.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Karla-Chan In reply to ppgrainbow [2009-09-02 20:57:46 +0000 UTC]

That is true, i think they might be scared though because people are so mean. Can you imagine what people would say to someone that said "I am new and learning art, so to learn i trace this picture," I think people would give them so much hassle and i think it is people doing that, that stops people being truthful.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ppgrainbow In reply to Karla-Chan [2009-09-02 21:01:24 +0000 UTC]

It would always be best for someone who is new at artwork to find ways to improve on their own using reference pose pictures that they created or stock photos...rather than existing art pieces from other artists.

Karla-Chan In reply to ppgrainbow [2009-09-02 21:27:43 +0000 UTC]

I agree and it is how i have learned, but i have heard people talk about tracing helping, it is just one method i guess.

You're welcome! I'm looking at Orgfree.com regarding my new home. I tried to register an account for Funpic.org and I've just realised that they have the worst service out there. If you want to continue on with this conversion. Don't hestitate to send me a note with the subject "Oekaki Webhosting" so that we won't have to clutter this stamp to excessive comments over favs.

I don't really like using the notes actually, but i don't mind having the convo some where else if you prefer.

I am sorry you are having such a hard time, why don't you try asking around to find a good place.

Thanks for the concern. I'm really busy setting up Insomnia Oekaki at Orgfree.com. I need to get the oekaki working properly once it's set up.
