Description
This is my first submission for the 2009 calendar year and before you start slamming me and making further gross misrepresentations in regards to this stamp about tracing and I am only neutral on the issue:Tracing is legal under the most circumstances and dA has professional lawyers who clearly investigated the issue. They found that it's okay to do it as long as:
1. It belongs only in the Fanart category.
2. Proper credit is given to the original artist. This includes permission and linking back to the original artwork.
3. No profit is ever made out of traced imagery at all.
4. The artist who traced the drawing has no intention to claim the image as their own. Otherwise, it's considered art theft and misrepresentation.
5. The original artist doesn't object towards the said deviant who traced the image. The original artist has every right to report it to the admins if they object and have it removed.
Many professional artists do not like people who trace their art as it is considered an insult to them if it's reused elsewhere.
Please DO NOT brand deviants who trace drawings as copiers in their entirety. Copying art in its entirety can be seen as theft and misrepresentation.
Comments on this stamp are closed. The reason is that only a small percentage of users agree in a neutralised matter. Totally disagreeing with this matter on the legality of tracing is unfortunate.
I cannot stress to the fullest extent that if you are unable to deal with it, then there are other websites where you can post your artwork.
If you still have a problem with this, I suggest that you note me privately.
If you are a subscriber, you can put this in your journal or shoutboard by using : thumb112764560 : somewhere in the field.

i think its alright too. Don't know why it can be seen as illegal, its not art theft. It would be worse to put up a screencap saying its your own work. Nice stamp!

As the first comment, you catch my attention more than others. How is tracing alright?
I see that some people are not good yet. I don't see why they have to share their copying.

anyway, i always thought it depends what you use tracing for. if you use it for profit, then thats not ok. if i were an artist, i wouldnt mind people tracing my art as long as they didnt profit from it. i am flattered that i have caught your attention, when there are many other comments by people who think its ok for practise, or the one that says there wouldnt be any parodies without tracing. My designer friends always trace, as they cant draw very well. so i think tracing is alright, but its just my opinion.

i dont think its alright, but i dont think its that bad either. It can be good for practice. I do it when i draw, and its mostly with my OCs. It helps me a lot. A friend of mine photocopies his OC's to help him. Tracing my OCS helps me, whatever works for people. I dont think its good, but i dont condone it. I appreciate your opinion as you are entitled to it, as i am to mine we shouldn't hate people because of opinions

(I am also addressing your other comment as well, so we can limit the amount of messages we receive ^^)
Does tracing really help in drawing? I mean, I just don't understand how it helps. I'm quite interested.
But (this is what I consider) the fundamental problem of tracing. First, even if some people to credit, most people don't read artist's comment, and then people think that this tracer drew this piece themselves! And, I guess this is probably unavoidable, people who trace have a tendency to ignore people when asked if they traced/edited. Or go in a fit of rage.

like i said, it helps only while practicing. i already said that my friend photocopies his art a lot. and i guess tracing can be for people who have no confidence about drawing, like i used to have. i was saddened by the fact i could never get my art right. so i just use it for practice. and the stuff ive been drawing recently has really improved. i can totally understand why you would be against tracing, though another user commented too, saying how she used to practice drawing power puff girls through tracing and it really helped.
Its like playing an instrument: before composing your own music, you have to play other people's music, looking at notes, right?
And a lot of my designer friends admit theyre no good at drawing, so they trace. The only thing with tracing, is you shouldnt let it take over your art. Use it to practice (for a while) but dont make a habit of it. And is it such a problem tracing one's own characters?... A while ago, a user was so angry with this stamp they blocked ppgrainbow, just for this. Is it really worth it?
its great to have met you Saisuki, you have a lot of interesting valid points

I think you make an interesting point about playing others people music before composing your own. I agree though, that people should not become dependent on tracing as a learning tool. If someone is, in fact, using tracing to learn and it does help them) they should think of it as training wheels for their art.

Darn, you made a great point with the music part XD I give you points for that. Blocking pggrainbow for this is stupid. Clearly somebody didn't read the artist's comment.
It is good to have met you too ^^

aww, thanks!
yes tracing can be good and can be bad too. Good if it actually helps you practise but bad if you upload a completely traced pic without even crediting the artist, which is plagairism. I once made that stupid mistake in an essay. I had only forgotten to credit one line in the whole essay, i had forgotten to put the foot note at the bottom of the page and since that day ive always been careful when quoting and crediting. Not crediting properly can ruin your life.

Jeez! I've yet to use any footnotes. I only use quotes in English essays, and I usually either don't have to credit, or just credit the author at the end of the quote. I really, really hate essays!

thats lucky, our teacher made us use footnotes on every single page and was rather nasty about it luckily, i didnt make that blunder in my final dissertation
i hate essays too, im so glad im out of uni and dont need to think about them anymore

Yowch!! That stinks! Wow, out of college? Or am I being stupid by thinking uni=university? XDDD I'm only in my sophomore year of high school!! Well, going to. I'm excited about school, because summer is hell with my mother, and I'm also excited for using the anime stuff I got (lol, i can deal with a year of school if i could just use the stuff i bought. i'm ridiculous XDD), but not excited for the essays and work. I'm taking a creative writing class on top of english 2, so i'm desperately hoping we won't have to do an essay in there. especially, a commentary on some fiction writer. i hate commentaries, i have no idea what i'm supposed to write (sorry if I'm repeating things ^^'!

hi! sorry for the late reply, i hardly use this account anymore
Yup, im out of uni (university) for about a year now it feels nice to be done after about 15 years of studying in total. Forgive me for being ignorant, but which year of high school is for sophomores exactly? Im not really familiar with the American Schooling system
but i would love to find out!
In the UK, there is primary school (4-10 years of age) secondary (11-16) then there is higher education, also known as A-levels, which is 2 years before University. Those last years can be taken at school or at a college (similar to high school, but its for adult education and not compulsory).
Creative writing is awesome, i love it! My school had a creative writing club, which was fun as we had to write our own short stories and novels. Havent done any writing in a long time. ;
I no longer use this account, here is my new account: which i have been updating a lot more. I just felt i needed a little change and was also being stalked by some people. So if you get a comment from that account, its me

It's okay. @.@ I don't want to be out of college XD I want to forever be supported by my parents like a lazy person!! XDDD Sophomore = 2nd year of high school. Oh. Wow. I went to a British school once, but then I transferred to an American International school. My sister stayed, though, so that's why she doesn't really know much about gallons, inches, pounds, etc.
Well, we have elementary school, which is about when you're five to ten years old. Then we have middle school, from eleven to thirteen years old (I might be getting these ages wrong, because i'm younger than everyone else in my grade ). Then it's high school, from 14 to 18. There is four years of schooling in highschool: first year, you are a freshman, second year, you are a sophomore, third year, you are a junior, and last year you are a senior. It is the same thing for most of our colleges ^^
Hm. Well it turns out I didn't get creative writing as a class, because it didn't fit in the schedule that the school made for me I will try again next year. I once went to a creative writing club, and it was great, but then my teacher never hosted the club again
Oh! So it was you!

Thanks so much for the first comment. Please try to spread the word to as many deviants as possible in order to try to clear up the confusion.
