Gimp. It's an awesome program It's meant for regular images but simple animations like this are doable with it, although maybe one day when I have some spare time and better hardware I'll get a 3-d program of some kind.

I still can't believe it's free. It's really awesome it's too bad the installation didn't work out for you. I THINK there's different installers for different names. I'm not sure, but it might be worth checking out.
