I kind of randomly came across Cyprus Youtube-channel and saw the challenge. I didn’t know anything about Wings of fire before. I love drawing dragons though and I like the colour palette (orange is my favourite colour), so I knew I had to enter.

Clan: SeaWing (I hope)
I hope I didn’t make any mistakes. This is the first time that I heard of Wings of fire, so I am not entirely sure how far one can push the design of bodyshape, fins, wings etc. before it stops being a SeaWing. I basically just used the description I found on the Wings of Fire Wiki, but in hindsight I feel like I should have oriented myself more on already existing Pictures of SeaWings.

Inspiration

Animals that helped inform the design were otters, seahorses, penguins and of course koi-fish. I decided to give him wings with a shape more closely resembling that of penguin-wings than the normal bat-type wing. This kind of wing structure would make for a better swimmer, but since they are very small Sienn wouldn’t be able to fly. I think this disability makes him a more interesting character.

Colour Palette

Most of the colours I used came from the given colour palette, but I ended up introducing some darker shades to balance the fairly bright colours. (I like to have values all the way from almost white to almost black in my pieces.) I also made a bioluminescent version of Sienn because I read on the Wiki that SeaWings have bioluminescent scales, which I think is super cool.

I named him Sienn because of the colour Sienna.

Closing thoughts

Placing the shadows was difficult, but in the end, I made it work somehow.

Drawing the 3/4-view of the head was easier than I initially thought it would be (although I almost forgot to add the whiskers, haha ).
This took quite a while to finish. It’s good that this is part of a challenge and thus has a timelimit, otherwise I would have keep refining it for waaaaaaay too long.

I had a lot of fun drawing this. Also, this looks way better than I anticipated. I think that’s a good sign that I’m improving at designing characters.
