Throughout the game you have to use a weighted cube to overcome obstacles and solve puzzles. On one level, you are given a weighted COMPANION cube (different only because it has a heart on it) that you must carry with you the entire level.
Throughout Portal, you should know (I recommend you get it as this is the best part of it) there is running commentary by the AI, GLaDOS, who instructs you through each level. Except she's totally dry and hilarious about it. The 'It will not threaten to stab you' quote is from her, about the cube.
SPOILER: At the end of the level, you have to destroy the cube and throughout the consecutive levels you learn those before you, some of them at least, fell in love with the cube.

trust me i know. it killed me once. i was on a risible platform trying to jump across. the killer companion cube fell to the ground so i shot a portal under it and shot another one above me and it crushed me
