How do we know it's a death beam? also, if it is then the argument would then be shifted to the artist. Asking, why Luna would cast a deadly spell if they were merely sparring? I guess it's really just how you interpret the image but if you interpret that as a death beam then that would contradict what you said earlier. or Luna and that guard are just really freaking crazy...

He is. I looked through the gallery of the guy who requested this work. This stallion is a high-ranking Royal Guard named Scope.

In the RP universe I'm on where Scope wears this armor, he's no longer completely "attached" to the Royal Guard. He's been inducted into Celestia's personal guard and is known as a "Sun Knight" and he can give orders to the other members of the guard when needed, but the only ponies he receives orders from are Celestia & Luna, and on occasion Cadance & Twilight.

Celestia chose him because he isn't like other guards. He isn't "all duty all the time atten-hut left right left right" like other guards and can be far more personable and sensitive.
He's powerful, but not mary-sue "I'M THE BEST UNICORN IN THE WORLD!" powerful.

Neat! Speaking of the Royal Guard though, did you ever wonder why there doesn't seem to be any mares among their ranks? I've heard the joking explanation that the mares are the leaders while the stallions are the expendable foot soldiers and laborers, but what do you really think is behind that? Any ideas?

I think it's for the same reason that there are no alicorn stallions: gender stereotypes. A guard must be big and strong, so it HAS to be a stallion, while a regal ruler must be majestic and graceful, so it HAS to be a mare (suck it, Prince Blueblood).
However, if had to give this a canonical explanation, here is my theory. Maybe there is a law that forbids mares from joining the Royal Guard, simply because it's not a job for a female. We already know that racism is canon in Equestria (remember the mule scenes?), so I wouldn't be surprised if sexism is canon too.

Is what I would say if what I said had any bearing on how Equestria's military is run. But if sexism is canon in regards to who can and can't join the Royal Guard, wouldn't disallowing mares to join the Guard be reverse sexism? I mean, Shining Armor's the Captain of the Guard, but Princesses Celestia and Luna are the ultimate authority.

That's exactly what I mean. Mares aren't strong enough to be in the Guard, and stallions aren't smart enough to be in the government. It's sexism in both directions.
