Description
Was at an anime convention with some buddies and got some inspiration. Doing a new shading method that takes a lot longer than spamming the bucket, but I think looks a lot better. Now, I'll answer some questions that nobody has.Why is it Arno and not Arnec anymore? His name is Arno because his father's French. Arnec was meant to be "Arnyek", Hungarian for Shadow. Since Shadow was Arno's original inspiration, still seen in the shape of his fur. However, it sounds too similar to Sonic and I just feel as though Arno Durandal suits him. He comes from a fancy family, he's a captain in the navy, and I feel it just fits. Ignore the fact he's canonically southern because his mother is essentially from Mobian Texas. Liber-tea go brrr-
What happened to his eye? At the end of part 1 (when my lazy arse writes it.), he fights against a powerful enemy. Except this is part 1, so no superpowers and stuff. Just his battlecruiser versus his enemy's battleship. It's a close fight, and it ends with Arno ramming his opponent to finish him. However, a chunk met his right eye and chose violence. Thus, his right eye is damaged.
Why do him and his mother have the same scar? Intentional choice to reinforce the theme of fate and cycles. Ravens are a common bird to appear, Arno's personal coat of arms features a raven, and the Durandal family emblem does as well. Szelei's tribe worships a goddess known as the Mother Raven, etc. Ravens are commonly associated with predictions, so it fits.
How old is Arno? 26 in part 1, 28 in part 2. He used to be 17 in my stories, but I've moved past that because I want it to be somewhat believable. Man's a ship captain and you think he did it at 17?? He was in the navy academy at that age! He's good, but not a prodigy!
Why isn't he depressed after losing his eye? Short answer: he doesn't care. Long answer: He got married, his ship was repaired and turned into a museum, and he's semi-retired as a teacher at the same academy he graduated from. And his rival is now his best friend and brother-in-law as Avalon is at peace. He's living the life! Until Solia invades Mobius because they're assholes and he's pressed back into service.
Does Arno have a super form? No. He has a Raven form instead. In short, his eye(s) turn magenta and he starts getting glowing magenta afterimages. Raven forms let him see briefly into the future as he feels hostile intentions, basically precognition. He's super fast, can fly, all the normal stuff, sans invulnerability. Because the Mother Raven wants you to actually have skill. If you're not good enough, you die, simple as that. Also why there's no "Raven emeralds" or something similar. You earn it, and can activate it whenever as a reward. You decide to be evil? Mother Raven would shrug and let you, because you're just screwing your own kind over and perpetuating the cycle of violence. Why should she care? She's got all the time in the universe. After all, Humanity did it, Mobians/Solians/Avalonians will do it too if nothing's done. To the Mother Raven, each cycle is an opportunity, and she wants to test them. Humanity failed. But can the next civilization learn? I find that to be an interesting ordeal. More than "power of friendship beats everything and everyone is redeemable." Fun fact: his raven form briefly allows him to see perfectly out of his damaged eye as well.
