Description
Universe: Pipevine ProjectShe belongs to a cast of three main characters (although my focus will be on two at first) who spend a good portion of their time at the Pipevine Cafe and/or Pipevine Lounge (in the same facility). This is meant to be a small project for me to practice drawing backgrounds, such as the cafe and lounge, and also to practice drawing simple character designs with consistency. At this time, I do not have her age set even though she is in a school setting but once I figure that out I will update this reference sheet. This small and gradual project is meant to be a fun break in between my school-workload and my larger projects.
Mia: "A girl who distrustfully walks away from happiness."
***Side note: I was not able to portray it properly but her bangs are similar to this , just with shorter-length hair and it does not cover her eye. Quick sketch example.
Outfit colors:
- Pale blue sweater
- White dress/formal shirt
- Burgundy tie and skirt (Her skirt is supposed to be knee-length or slightly above her knees).
- Navy blue tights
- Black penny loafers
- Silver necklace (I know it does not look silver, but that was my goal
).
- Diligent
- Humble
- Reserved
- Considers herself a realist
- Has a hard time trusting others
- Has a hard time understanding sarcasm
- Simplicity
- Fluffy/plush/soft textures (scarves, sweaters, blankets, etc.)
- Moths (she sees them as being simple and modest; she likes their tendency of having neutral color schemes).
Fun fact 1: She greatly dislikes butterflies. Perhaps it's due to the romanticized depiction of butterflies even outside of fantasy novels and their prevalence in the marketplace (along with heart and star patterns). It could also be the amount of positive-attention butterflies receive over other insects or the fact that she does not find any aspect of them to be attractive.
Not to be misunderstood as fear of butterflies, but can be seen more as an annoyance with the lavishness, she sees, surrounding them.
However, after meeting a poet she would later see as her kindred spirit, she has learned to have an appreciation for at least one kind of butterfly. This butterfly, to her, represents her kindred spirit. It is ironic, considering her initial feelings, that her most cherished item is a butterfly necklace.
She either tucks the necklace underneath her dress shirt (intentionally putting it the closest she can to her heart) or holds onto it, like in the picture below, as a good luck charm:
Since the day she received it, she has never been without it. She was not one to believe in good luck charms, and never thought she would put so much value into a materialistic item, yet she is learning to open up and explore the worlds she had closed off from herself--thanks to this gift (in reference to the necklace, but of course there is more beyond the surface of the physical item itself). The butterfly seen in the picture above is called the Pipevine Swallowtail .
Kindred Spirit:
Fun fact 2: No matter how hard she tries, her hair will always end up being uneven/messy.
When I have time, I'd like to make a mini-comic in reference to this. I am slowly working on an expression sheet for her, some of which can be seen on my twitter so far.
There is more that could be said about her, but I would like to try illustrating her personal struggles hidden behind a facade and her later "metamorphosis" that enables her to view the world in a much different light.
Thank you for your time and have a wonderful day~*

For something that's just a small project for you to practice drawing backgrounds, you sure did put a lot of genuine thought into making Mia a really interesting character. I find that the best stories tend to have a very tangible link to human development and growth/experience, so you've already got me excited for what's in store for Pipevine
