This is a shot of my grandpa. I am not sure if I love this shot. I feel that something is missing. Let me know what you guys think.Related content

I love this shot. He looks wise and thoughtful, and you can only guess what's going through his mind, what he thinks of the world. At the same time, it looks so much like the typical papa reading the morning paper, kinda thing, but not. I love it. And the sharpness in all of your photos is SO AMAZING every time!! What type of lens do you use?

I think what's missing is the emotion. It is a great picture, by all means, in terms of lighting, sharpness, contrast, and so forth. And I don't think the newspaper looks too busy at a small level, because most of the texts are indistinct and just become a texture. But what's no there is a sense of age, wiseness, memory, warmth, calmness... A good way to approach these are perhaps to feature a background, which doesn't have to be eye-catching, but convey the sense of oldness, perhaps in sepia would do the job.

One more thing... I love the striped shadows across his face.

I love the picture, actually. Your grandpa looks pretty cool.
I think the the type on the page of the paper make the picture look a bit busy. Perhaps in photo shop you can brighten the pic a bit, but push the paper to be a bit darker?

Thanks. My Grandpa is in India and I am here in AZ. Wish I was there so I could take a lot more pictures of him. He is a wonderful person.
About the Humming Bird, umm wish we had different kinds coming in our backyard but now I have lost interest in bird feeding so they don't come anymore. The lens that I shot humming bird with..broke. So no more of those kind of extreme closeups. So I will have to start eating rice and beans until I save up enough to buy a sweeter lens.

When I look at the piece smaller, it looks really great! When I look at it bigger, it still looks pretty good. I just get a bit distracted.
You should definitely take more photos of your Gpa!
by the way, the humming bird linked here is amazing! I captured one while I was photographing the crows but only a few turned out. Nice job.
