Description
I hate this scanner...the words on the other side shouldn't have shown through!!This is a ROUGH SKETCH of Mary, the Blessed Mother of Jesus, as she would appear to Ferratans (or how Ferratans see her).
If the Blessed Mother ever performed a Marian Apparition to the Ferratan people, this is how she'd have to appear in order to appeal to them. She is traditionally dressed as a Ferratan Matriarch and Railroad Baroness, and wears the high-waisted Tri-Skirt. She also carries the Blade of a Matriarch.
Over the centuries, Mary has been "reimagined" by various cultures so that people could more easily identify with her and her Son. Medieval and Renaissance painters depicted her dressed as a queen from their time and culture, and Our Lady of Guadalupe looks like a native Mexican.
Ferrata is the world I've created - for more insight check the comments for my Thundermare DVD cover.
I tried to incorporate elements from Mary's other apparitions and descriptions in the Bible - the twelve spikes on her headband represent the twelve stars that the Book of Revelation says Mary is crowned with (I also put them on the middle section of her duty-skirt), along with a few Crosses here and there.

Haha, thank you - I did take some influence from that passage where it describes a "woman crowned with 12 stars." Which is why she has 12 spikes on her crown, and the 12 stars on her tunic.
And I know, it's ALWAYS nice to see other believers on DeviantART!! Not everybody is a furry "artist" or anime fan, thankfully!

Gah, thanks to not checking my inbox, i didn't notice this until now! Interesting concept, and i really like the trace and the pose. It's a very firm/strong pose. Also, the little logo that says Our Lady of Ferrata... great design!

Thanks, I'm glad you like it!! I'm also very happy that the pose was effective at conveying exactly what I had hoped it would convey!! I think this is one of the coolest pictures I've drawn, and I enjoy looking at it a lot - I just think it's so cool that this is how Ferratans would be able to relate to/respect/take seriously the Blessed Mother. You don't see cultures like that every day!!

That's the Mother how I like her!
(Uh, who are the Ferrata??)
And there's a nice trick to avoid visible prints from the other side of the paper when scanning: Just put a black peace of paper on the peace you want to scan. The black paper "swallows" the black prints and you have a uni-coloured background (more or less). Of course it's a bit darker then, but you can make the whole peace a bit lighter and increase the contrast...

Thank you VERY much for the help! I never thought of that...thanks so much for the recommendation. I'm going to re-scan it with the darker backing - again, I really appreciate it!!

Heck no I haven't forgotten it! It was a big part of my life for eighteen years even though I didn't like it, and I'll never loose what I learned. I even surprise my mom at times with what I know about the Bible, and she's the best Catholic I know besides my Grandma.
And it's not because of the reasons you think that I left. I just never enjoyed it; I never got anything out of it, and I still don't whenever my parents make me go.
I don't want to go back to the Church, and I wouldn't be happy if any of my friends wanted to convert, but if they wanted to I wouldn't stand in their way despite my reservations in that area. But I'd have them speak to my mom first before they thought about talking to a priest; she's one of the reasons I sometimes consider returning because of how true she is to her faith. It doesn't sound rehearsed or fake coming from her; she Believes, and not in an over-bearing or annoying born-again way at all. She was born Roman Catholic and she'll die a proud Catholic, but she has a lot of problems with the Church and their refusal to include, and how they don't see woman as much more than the bearers of children at times. I hate the Church for shaking her Faith as much as it has.

Promus-Kaa In reply to Shockwavecg [2009-01-14 02:06:26 +0000 UTC]
What do you mean, "The Church and their refusal to include?" Include what?
A distinction must be made between the Church and the Faith. The CHURCH is the people who call themselves Catholic, who follow the Faith. The Chuch is often an asshole and their own worst enemy, since some Catholics are assholes and people don't like the Faith because of them. But that doesn't make the Faith wrong - there's nothing wrong with the Faith itself. It's not the Faith that oftentimes only sees women as childbearers - that's the couple of dickwads who the Church consists of. One shouldn't blow off an entire Faith (and set of religious beliefs) just because of a few assholes.

Shockwavecg In reply to Promus-Kaa [2009-01-14 02:12:45 +0000 UTC]
Including certain people; because not accepting those people you loose members of the congregation, and the Church wonders why their numbers are dropping. They just can't get past some simple barriers, like what I said about woman in the Church. My mom is pretty unhappy because they aren't given much to do and she keeps telling them 'Excuse me, but who runs the house while the men are away?' Pretty much she wants woman to have a bigger roll in the Church and they aren't getting it. She wanted me to become a priestess, but I'm not suited for that; it's not a job you can lie to yourself about, take it just to please someone, you know?

Promus-Kaa In reply to Shockwavecg [2009-01-14 02:33:16 +0000 UTC]
Again...that doesn't mean the Faith is wrong. There's nothing wrong with the Faith itself.
There's also nothing sexist about only men being allowed to be priests; there's a very logical reason for this and it has nothing to do with suppressing women. Priests are supposed to be representatives of Christ Himself - their jobs in life and the way they are supposed to take care of Catholics is supposed to be done in the same manner that Christ did. I'm not sure if I'm explaining it clearly enough, but having a female priest would be akin to claiming that Christ was a woman...which He was not.
The Faith has nothing against women, and in fact has a very exhaulted view of women (despite how some Catholics choose to act). It's actually very special that the Faith holds something as lowly and simple as motherhood in such high regard - a lot of religions and cultures have all sorts of things against this. The Faith respects women in all walks of life, even if they choose to merely raise children with their husbands. The Faith honors many women as saints, the Blessed Mother being held in special regard.
Indeed, some nuns "outrank" priests in terms of religious hierarchy...I really hate it when people accuse the Faith of being sexist, because anyone who ever bothered to look into the FAITH (instead of just the occasional dickwads) knows that it is NOT sexist.

Exactly! Thank you for actually understanding why women can't become priests! (Sorry, but it drives me nuts that nobody actually gets that anymore)
And Christ was anything but sexist Himself. Ever notice the ratio of women to men standing by the foot of the cross?
Um, yeah... Sorry about the interruption... You just made me very very happy is all...

Promus-Kaa In reply to sorentense [2009-07-04 02:39:22 +0000 UTC]
No problem! It irritates me, as well - especially since people use it as an excuse to call the Church sexist so often. If they weren't so ignorant, they wouldn't be able to use that against the Church! It's just like when Protestants say "Catholics worship statues and they worship Mary too."
And heck yeah, Christ was all about having woman friends! It wouldn't have been proper for Him to get married (since He's God, and all that...), but he had nothing against them as people. Heck, his Mom was around the three years of his ministry...and many of the early churches had women in positions of authority. It was women who discovered the empty tomb of Christ, and women were present during the Pentacost!
No need to apologize, I appreciate your input.

Yes, it is sad that people see us that way. I heard one priest (who used to be Protestant) compare the Church to a stained glass window: "It makes no sense from outside, but when you see it from within, it's the most beautiful thing..." And we don't worship Mary any more than the people of the US worship Washington and Lincoln.
Did you ever see The Passion of the Christ? I loved how it represented Mary and Mary Magdalene in relation to Christ.
Oh good... I'm glad you're not upset with me.

Promus-Kaa In reply to sorentense [2009-07-07 19:57:12 +0000 UTC]
Wow, you used the exact same analogy that I always do!! Just because we build statues (and temple/shrine-like "memorials") to honor the likes of Washington and Lincoln does NOT mean we worship them!! Same goes for people who are just as important to the Catholic faith.
I did see it, and I also liked how they did the characters. I especially liked how nobody spoke English, but I was surprised (and a little miffed) that despite all the intricate historical and cultural detail they put into the film, THEY GOT THE CROSS ITSELF WRONG!! I thought for SURE we'd get an accurate cross for the first time in film history, but no. And not just that, but the position of the nails in Christ's hands! You can't drive a nail through somebody's palm and expect it to hold their weight - there's no bone bridging the fingers, and the nail would tear right through. If they did it accurately, they would have placed the nails behind the wristbones of the arm. I know it sounds stupid to be nitpicking the technical (and inconsequencial) details of a movie which mainly focused on the spiritual representation of the event of Christ's sacrifice...but it WAS a movie which painstakingly strove for 100% historical accuracy down to the leather on their sandals. But they couldn't be bothered to get the details of the most important part (the Crucifixion) right? That just confuses me.
And of course I'm not upset at you. I don't think that's possible!

sorentense In reply to Promus-Kaa [2009-07-08 00:42:34 +0000 UTC]
Whoa, seriously? That's kind of cool... I guess great minds really do think alike!
I don't really recall how the cross itself was messed up... I only saw it once... And, yes, I did notice that they drove the nails into the wrong place, but (you'll probably hate me for this) I didn't especially care about that. As usual, I was more into the story than the technical details. And because they messed up all of TWO DETAILS does not mean that they got the whole Crucifixion wrong. If you recall, most Church crucifixes also show the nails in the hands.

Promus-Kaa In reply to sorentense [2009-07-31 23:12:51 +0000 UTC]
Well yes, a lot of crucifixes get it wrong, but for a movie which prided itself on excruciating accuracy, I was surprised they got that basic thing wrong.
I don't hate you for not caring about the details, because I didn't really care about them overall, either. The point of the film was Christ's sacrifice, and it certainly conveyed the pain and suffering of that very well. I was just a little surprised, that's all.
