Description I wanted to I guess kinda show the process of how this goes but this was the best I could come up with.......I'm kinda lazy . I work in a lot of programs but the creation part of it most of the time only takes 2 or 3 of them.

1) I start off in maya, make a cube and just extrude the sides till I get whatever the shape is that I'm going for.

2) Next I bring up its topology and extrude key detail like eye sockets, ears, mouth, whatever, and do my best to not mess up the topology (not always successful with that part though).

3) After that I get it into zbrush and try to get its shape and the detail right. The zbrush model has dumb high topology but you use the detail from that to make bump maps, displacement and texture maps for a low poly game model or a mid lvl model. I have never been a good texture artist so this is kinda hard for me .

4) Back to maya and for animation purposes I rig my models up. This one is pretty basic but this process can take a cool minute for me to do and is filled with more complications then I'm willing to get into......it kinda sucks.

5) I left out the unfolding the mesh step (which no one likes to do). Doing that lets the programs know how to read and map the texture onto the mesh. Once thats done and you get your textures and everything hopefully you get something your happy with.

I know this was long, wordy, boring and probably more information then any1 really cares to know but believe it or not I left out hella steps lol. Also keep in mind that I do everything the wrong way and if you spoke with some of the profecinals that do this stuff I'm sure they would tell you "don't listen to that guy" or something, but this is how I get down  .

Don't worry, your process is actually spot-on. Different people have different preferences, but basically it's the same thing. I'm doing my thesis on 3D Animation and I was taught by professionals. Your work is great, and you seem to have an actual understanding of 3D modeling and texturing (unlike many others who just use Blender and the bare minimum). Are you self-taught or did you go to school?

Well thanks a lot for letting me know, and for the complement! Never really thought of myself as self-taught but I guess in some respects I am. I never went to school for it but you know there's damn near a tutorial for everything on youtube lol, and what I couldn't find what I needed on there I looked at Digital Tutors and on forums.

Damn son! You weren't kidding, they all do start off as blocks. XD

This is really cool, and a very general idea of how you create your models. Very nice job on the Squirtle!

This may be a stupid question, but I have no experiance in any of the mentioned programs. But I've been wanting to get zbrush. Which is where my question finally comes out.. is it possible to make step 1-3 in just zbrush? Not sure my pc can handle many more programs, its rather stuffed. I just want a good detail 3d maker program. :l

You could also try Blender. It's free, but pretty powerful. It might be a good program to start with, as you can practice modeling, textures, rigging, animation, as well as video editing. The program seems intimidating for some people, but in my experience it would be easier to start with a program like Blender than to start with a simpler program that will teach you bad habits and then have to move up when you begin to "outgrow" it.

You're welcome.
I should clarify that I was not talking about ZBrush or Maya when I referred to "simpler programs that teach bad habits". I have personally not worked with ZBrush, and have not worked with Maya for ... centuries, haha. So, I have nothing negative to say about either of those programs.

Nah that aint a stupid question at all. I start in maya because I intend on using everything I make for animation purposes but if you just want to model then there is no need. Most people use zbrush just to sculpt so they can showcase there work, they don't have to worry about good topology or anything like that but because I want my models to move properly on a rig and to not have to re-topologist to get a lower rez model I do it with maya.
So yeah zbrush is a light weight program that can handle a lot, mud box is post to be pretty good to but I never used it b4. I hope this helped out a lil :]
