A fun fact:
On April 1st, 1976, Rush released their album titled '2112'. The overall concept of the album was the overthrow of government (The Preist in the Temples of Syrinx) into a new and peaceful world order. It wasn't exactly the end of the world, but the change was huge and resulted in a change in the world presented in the album.
Not exactly an apocalyptic prediction, but pretty awesome that Rush released this album with a similar theme long before the theories of world destruction.
