Inbetween leaving Blackthorne and reaching the Dance Hall, James catches Slim, a rowdy Tangela who tricked James into capturing her by pretending that the local pokemon were terrorizing her when it was really the other way around, and Maku, a Tyrogue who had recently parted ways with his trainer after his pragmatic fighting style had become enough of an issue that the two couldn't stand each other anymore (something James has no problem with). Slim makes it clear that the only reason she's on James' team is to face off against more diverse opponents, and refuses to actually take orders from him, as he's only the enabler to her. The two of them evolve shortly afterward, and James rotates both of them out of his team for the time being.
While in Ecruteak, James asks his father, Chuck, to send his Magnemite, Racket, over to him, as he'd lent them to him for the time being. James finds out that the reason Chuck asked to train his Magneton in the first place was so he could teach a lesson to trainers who thought they could stroll in with flying types and clear out his gym without a problem (James isn't too surprised by this). Chuck sends Racket to James after informing him that they evolved during that time period. Chuck also briefly has a talk with James about what he'd heard from Whitney and Pryce about his involvement in the Radio tower incident, and asks him to be careful in the future.
When James goes around to the Dance hall after he's done with everything else, they explain the request that they made to him- wanting him to tame the legendary bird, Ho-oh after they summon it. They tell him the story of how Ho-oh was once one of Johto's guardians, but when humans developed the technology to capture pokemon, conflict with other countries grew in scale. Seeking to have a decisive advantage over their enemies, the people of Johto took to trying to capture both Lugia and Ho-oh. While Lugia took refuge in the depths of the ocean, Ho-oh could only avoid capture by air, where it was much more easily pursued than its counterpart. Due to Ho-oh's rebirthing powers, it evaded capture by repeatedly destroying itself when it needed to and hiding within the realm between life and death for as long as it could. However, Decades upon Decades of destroying itself and reviving itself, coupled with its anguish at being turned on by the very people it was supposed to protect lead Ho-oh to lose its sanity and retaliate, fighting off its pursuers. At this point, Lugia returned from the oceans and sealed Ho-oh within its own realm of rebirth where it stays for centuries at a time. The sealing isn't perfect, however, and when Ho-oh has recovered enough strength, it can break through to the other side, with assistance. The Kimono girls exist to provide this assistance. Every generation of Kimono girls try to bring it through, but each time they fail to keep it on their side.
After James asks why they even need him, they show him the clear bell, and tell him that the clear bell is the last shred of Ho-oh's sanity, and the only way for them to bring Ho-oh back is to reunite the two. The role James plays is in asserting dominance over Ho-oh so they can perform the ritual and restore it to its former state. Without its sanity, Ho-oh is a feral beast who only aims to destroy indiscriminately, so every generation of Kimono girls seeks out a trainer they think can take on the task, and James' feats have made them think that he's a very good choice.
James starts having problems with this, however, as it sounds like a huge risk that he'd be taking. He doesn't know WHY they even want Ho-oh back, as it doesn't seem like there'd be a reason anyway. They tell him that their reason is simple, that Ho-oh is necessary for Johto's forgiveness for their sins all those years ago. They believe in Ho-oh's decision to purge the humans that tried to abuse its power for war, and that since they avoided Ho-oh's purifying flames before, Johto was still not clean. In short, they believe that burning Johto to the ground so that it can start anew is something that needs to happen.
Naturally James thinks that they're insane and refuses to take part in their ritual, which they expected. They then start listing off events that happened in James' journey that they should not have known, and the people that he's met, even before he started, revealing that they've been spying on him his whole journey without his knowledge. They then proceed to deliver a thinly veiled threat, basically saying that if he were to refuse they would be able to kill the people he holds dear easily and discretely- "Just like we did with Ethan.". When James demands to know what they mean by Ethan, they don't tell him anything other than that's information that Elm should probably know.
While James tries to think of a solution, they attack him with their pokemon as a last 'test'. Hilton and Racket are killed in the fight Hamma goes on a rampage defeating the rest of their Pokemon. Before Hamma can do too much damage, however, James recalls her. When asked for his answer again, after some hesitation James agrees to it.
SITE NOTE: Before this point in the comic, it would have been established that legendary pokemon cannot be contained in standard issue pokeballs, explaining why nobody was able to catch Ho-oh before

Aw man, I loved Hilton! I always love when a 'weak' pokemon like Parasect or Beedrill becomes a useful and lovable character in a Nuzlocke.

This is probably not the place to ask, but is Hamma a girl or a boy? Sorry, just wondering.

Hamma's a girl. She's referred to with female pronouns quite frequently.

RIP, Hilton. You were a steedfast little tropperette to the bitter end. Where others say Parasect couldn't do shit, you proved them all wrong. You will be missed, never forgotten.
Farewell, our good friend...

Oh no, all of the Electric Pokémon in a Nuzlocke are meeting their downfall one by one... I hate when I'm right... Hope this doesn't affect Kynim's Andy or Landwalker's Apollo.
Ethan?! I though James was Ethan. Buring down Johto?! What is wrong with those girls? Are they Team Flare or something? A Tangrowth in Johto... Kinda makes sense. I always somewhat disliked Eeveelutions, but now this have turned personal! It was the Vaporeon, wasn't it?

Why does the "Burn Johto to the ground to start anew" remind me of Shin Megami Tensei? It's kind of like Nocturne how it "Started Over" or how it happend in the original SMT. But that aside NO!!!!! not Hilton I thought she was gonna go all the way and survive!

I am beginning to enjoy this medium over the original play-by-play comic walkthru. I enjoy a good story, and this provides wonderful plot in quick succession of events. How exciting! I am so looking forward to the reveal of what is truly going on behind the scenes of James' past and etc.
