Description
Where to start ... It's been a year since I started working on Ninja Gaiden Sigma content. Naturally, I had this Kasumi costume on my list. Having to rig everything was daunting so, of course, this got put on the back burner. I figured it would be nice to eventually make a mod out of it. Heck, it would have been nice to do anything with it since, it's never been use-able in any Ninja Gaiden OR Dead or Alive game. It's only seen for a few brief seconds as Kasumi made a cameo in Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, and her face isn't even seen at that. It has a nice unique variation to her traditional default costume. I know this costume was requested along with other Ninja Gaiden costumes for DOA5's 5 year DLC life cycle, and yet nothing came of it. AND THEN Team Ninja decides to use it NOW as a Pre-Order incentive for DOA6... insert hashtag angry face exclamation point. I was reluctant to finish this and wait for new assets, but then I settled on finishing it anyway because there is still one at least one factor that separates it from the ever-nerfed-SJW-pandering modern designs that Team Ninja wants to sell out to these days... insert more rage faces here.I don't think Kasumi has been a favorite of mine since maybe the first couple of DOA games, but I really like this costume for her. It definitely added a more casual vibe to her classic default. I'm more partial to medium blues over light blues, plus the blue and gold are a nice scheme. It's also unusual for her to have much red mixed in. In game, she has loose hair, so the hair pin affixed to her belt was a neat touch too even though it isn't quite visible from this angle.
What I did to it: Definitely, had to use some DOA5 reference rigging including borrowing weights for the cloths from the DOA5 counterpart, and even did custom rigs on the ribbons & sword strings. I had to make custom meshes for the kunai rings and straps since the garbage Vita meshes were so low poly that no amount of subdivision was going to help them. Lots of mesh tweaks were needed since subdividing low poly meshes does not look good in some areas. Per usual, it's using my latest tricks minus physics along with some small improvements to my skin shader and hair material.
What I did not do to it: After learning the hard way with the Ayane port, I decided not to bother with using the original body frame since it has to be scaled a lot to match DOA5. I also did not perfectly scale the torso. Ninja Gaiden proportions are more exaggerated and since I already spent a lot of time on Ayane's port I re-used some of her assets since regardless of game her assets are usually similar to Kasumi. I also did not bother with the loose hair from the original, too much time. I at least did modify the textures to more closely resemble her classic lighter hair color.
Thankfully, I was able to knock this out in about 2-3 days. I'm really happy with the end result, and hope to now have a full roster of Ninja Gaiden's leading ladies. Enjoy!

When I first saw this outfit in that one scene from NGS2, I couldn't help but immediately go gaga over it. I have a thing for outfits that expose the shoulders and armpits, and I've been wondering if this thing had a name to reference it by.

Was this outfit at the end of the story mode of Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2?

It can be seen, briefly, during the end scene of Ayane's chapter of Sigma 2

That one is a cool look too. Albeit that game looks like a lot censorship.

Thanks Yep, it's a bit exaggerated because of base that I used, but otherwise it's the real deal.

I was also super disappointed that the costume was never used since it seemed like a nice natural evolution of her original costume. I really thought they should have put it in NG3 since she showed up in the razor edge version. Oh well now we will see her in DOA6

Totally agreed. That's a good way to describe it. Razor's Edge should have been a no-brainer. :-/

How did TN nerf Kasumi's design in DoA6? Is it that different from her model in 5?

In general, TN has made an effort to continue toning down the fan service.

Hmm. That seems like a sketchy path for them to take. DoA is known for the fanservice as much if not more than the polished and fast paced fighting mechanics.
I did notice characters like Helena and Ayane looking significantly different. Not sure why TN can't just stick to their designs. DoA5 had great models, and so did DoAX3.

Agreed. I think DOA5 is the best balance. DOAX3 is more fan service than solid gameplay, but it's like it's now all or nothing. All fan service like Venus Vacation, or all gameplay like DOA6. There's a combination of western feminism and mob rule scaring the crap out of developers, and they fear that their products won't sell if they don't at least pretend care about changing their overall aesthetics. It's already affected Sony, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and more. That fact that even Team Ninja is caving to some of this is really disappointing.

I strongly agree on all of that... but I'll try to reserve judgement until DoA6 releases. DoA5 received similar criticism in 2012 because the developers tried projecting a new vision with less fanservice for the franchise without Itagaki. In the end, that game turned out to be a massive fanservice trip with the DLC costumes. I get the feeling we'll see a fairly vanilla release in terms of fanservice with a solid, if somewhat unexciting fighting mechanic, and then we will see a trickle of DLC costumes roll out over the next few years to leech off their core consumers.
If my comment is any indication, I have zero faith in TN's creative or commercial integrity.
I love these games, but developers and publishers in general are testing what little patience I have left at this point.

Totally fair points. I guess I already passed the patience point, and carry little optimism these days. I've been in proximity to some of the minds who have influence over various strategies, and just by observation I can tell that much of Western development really would like to be rid of the fan service stigma. Any attempt to balance this via fan service DLC is just a reactive means to placate the crowd while doing a cash grab without standing by the identity of a product. Both DOAX3 and VV show that in the end even fan service is really just about cashing in as long as a region will allow it.

I understand why Western developers might decide to steer away from that influence. Investors have their ear to the ground of the market, and unfortunately an exceptionally vocal few have stomped on the ground long enough for them to listen.
TN might adjust character models initially as a response, but their history would tell me they might intend to have it both ways. I could be totally wrong.
DoAX3 and DoAXVV... I have to agree. They're throw-away titles that require little overhead to maintain and profit from. Doax3 is dead, but DoAXVV could continue indefinitely. TN may try to compartmentalize fanservice from polished, fast paced fighting mechanics and tap into the Western market without the risk 9f backlash, as minimal as I personally believe it is (the people complaining aren't the ones who ever considered buying these games in the first place).
DoA2:U did this well over a decade ago. Players could unlock the fanservicey costumes if they played certain modes long enough, and the strictly competitive crowd could skip all that amd go straight into the multiplayer with no qualms.

Pretty much agree, I think frustration is from the political & cultural shifts that a loud whining majority is dictating influence more than the majority that is indifferent. DOA isn't somehow worse than it was 10-15 years ago, it's just that the internet has accelerated the voice of trolls.
