Description
I've been wanting to redraw my avatar for a while now, so I thought I might as well try to properly design the dragon thing I've been using to sort-of represent myself online for years now! Since I've never really had a clear design for it before. I consider this a failure for various reasons, though I thought I might as well post it anyway.I wanted to use its face as my avatar, but when shrunk down it just doesn't look right at all! It's largely due to the purple eyes; I'll need to change those.
And it's missing its ears!! I didn't realise that until it would have been too much of a pain to add them in.
Also, it looks really feminine, I think, and I'm a twenty-odd-year-old man... so using something like this to represent myself is sure to raise a few eyebrows. o_O
(Yes, instead I should draw some immensely muscular uber-hulk wielding full-sized tanks in each ham-sized fist, his ruggedly bearded face contorted into bloodlustful roar. That would represent me much better.)
ANYWAY! Some things I tried to include to at least make it interesting:
- Its skeleton is made of gemstone, specifically turquoise (I always used to call myself the 'Turquoise Dragon' despite being more like azure... I'm fond of teal, though, and wanted to use it somewhere).
- It doesn't have physical wings, but its scapulae extend beyond its flesh as those crystals on its shoulders, which produce, uh... magic... wings... or something. I don't know. MAGIC!! (I suppose they'd manipulate the miasma in some way and [Alora Fane jargon]...)
- I referenced my Alora Fane world via the 'aster' (flower thing) attached to one of the horns; it was positioned there so then it'd appear on the small square avatar.
- The markings represent the sentiments from my Alora Fane world, specifically Creation. I've been intending to use the Sorrow sentiment to define myself, but I think in order to change from being a miserable, depressed person, perhaps I should use the Creation one instead.
- I liked the black feathered hat on the previous version, but certain people seem to look at it and assume I'm one of those 'fedora-wearing douchebags', and I'd rather do without that unpleasant association, thankyouverymuch...
Guh! How do other people NOT write hugely long descriptions?!

Very creative. I enjoy the description, and I feel a calmer, serene Avatar is the way to go. While I am not always on board with the changes in your games, your art certainly is beautiful. PS: Add the hat. It's quite awesome.

You know, I've been looking at the dragon for a bit now, and, as another has mentioned, it really is immensely cute.
The aster on it's horn looks sort of like an earring! Except for horns. Yes. Regardless, it interests me how one of the 'petals' has cracks through it, obviously referencing Fracture. Not entirely sure why it interests me, although it brings to mind that the dragon might have an omniscience of sorts regarding it? I'm not sure why I keep talking about it.
As and aside, the fur in replacement of scales is an interesting bit, and always has been, to me. I believe once you might have mentioned why you choose fur instead of scales, but I forget what it was. Why have you always used fur in place of scales on your avatars?
The markings on the legs and tail, I think, really added to it as a whole, as well. I like the colors.
And I'm sincerely not sure on the hugely long descriptions part, I do that myself.
And I liked the hat. 'Twas nice.

I love it! It stinks that the head didn't scale down well for an avatar. It does look a bit feminine, but I don't really see an issue with that unless having a feminine avatar makes you uncomfortable (I'm not overly fond of the idea that men are supposed to be one way and women another). I think the crystals are super nifty, but I'm also a bit of a sucker for crystals on animals.
Maybe you could try a different hat for this avatar if you don't like how people view fedoras (which I think yours is actually wearing, surprisingly enough. What people tend to think is a fedora is actually a trilby, but whatever). I would suggest a bowler hat with a red band instead of a feather. Bowlers don't get enough credit (much like like oft forgotten echidna).
As for the missing ears, maybe it has ear holes like owls! And if they weren't evenly placed (also like owls), it could use the differences in the time it takes for sound to reach each ear hole to make a three dimensional sound map of the area it's in. That would be pretty cool :3

This is great man. Have you thought about doing a humanoid dragon similar to aΒ Lizalfos from Legend Of Zelda? Those are pretty manly if you ask me. The most memorable ones for me would have to be the ones from Ocarina Of Time, that game was practially my childhood, anyways getting off topic a little bit. Just some food for though really. And it does look a little feminine but I'd if you put that black hat back on it it'd look more manly, also the pink spots make it look more female. I love the colours though, blue and green are my favourite colours. I know I'm generalizing the colours by saying blue and green but I like any shade of colour for the most part that is related to either colour.

Aww he's so cute and you know, it's refreshing to see a guy's avatar that's not ultra masculine, and haha I chuckled at your description of that, you have such a great sense of humour. He's also not ultra dragon with all the spikes of villainy and fire breathing jagged toothiness. Melikes! The unique, gentle, colourful design says more about you than those kind of stereotypes ever could. Thanks for providing the description too, it's always fascinating to read ideas about creature design and heritage. Turquoise is one of my fave colours and minerals. I just want to touch those adorable crystalline horns. The expression on his face is sweet, sort of long-suffering and yet hopeful.
Alora Fane sounds really interesting. Miasma, aster, sentiments. Concepts I hope I'll learn more about.
As to depression, I feel for you. I see you've been having a tough time of late and I hope you can find your way through it quickly. I've long suffered major depressive disorder and social anxiety. If you'd like to talk about it, and I know how hard that is, I've a listening ear. In the meantime find some peace, some space, and keep on being creative. It helps.

Thank you so much for the comment! It's very reassuring to hear positive things about this about this design, since it is meant to be gentle and, well, different from the typical aggressive macho stuff that most guys would associate themselves with, and while I like that myself, I worried that others might not.
Your interpretation of the facial expression is spot-on, which makes me glad! And thanks for reading the description, too!
After discovering your world-building stuff recently, I thought it might be interesting for me to make some kind of 'About Alora Fane' info sheet thing, or whatever those things are called, though I've yet to get around to it (like with so many other things I need to do)! Maybe soon!
It's always interesting finding others who go through depression and social anxiety, as they've both affected my life for a long time now...
Over the last week or two, I feel like I've been making huge strides towards overcoming these issues through self-development and increased understanding, and changing my avatar from my current sad-looking one to a more smiley one was largely because of that. I'd be very interested in hearing about your experiences, coping methods, etc though! I'm always glad to find people who understand these difficulties from their own experience, and who are willing to talk and listen about them.

I'd love to read an infosheet, if you get round to completing one. They're always so chock full of great ideas. I'm so glad to hear about your change in avatar and the reasons you've been able to change it. You're making great progress. Keep at it!

I've always liked your other avatars and this one is no exception. I find the concept of it's wings being miasmal (that's a word right?) rather than physical interesting (in a good way). My favorite part of this is the Alora Fane flower he's (it's, you're?) wearing. As you mentioned the eyes seem a bit off compared to the rest of the colors and the ears are missing, but otherwise this is a good concept.
