Description
My latest game that's actually FINISHED! I don't know how much it'll appeal to the people on this site, but I'm submitting it anyway...Raider: Episode 1 is the first of five parts of a story involving a Cyrian called Arkus Zei, a space pirate, who makes a living by 'raiding' the wrecks of dead spaceships for loot. Sometimes this ends up getting him into more than he expected...
It's an action platformer that's meant to be reminiscent of 'old-school' games.
IT IS DESIGNED TO BE CHALLENGING.
I get the feeling that many people will find it 'too hard', but if you don't play platformers regularly, then PLEASE play on Beginner mode. If you find even that too hard, I am sorry, but this game wasn't designed for casual players in the first place.
The controls are in-game, and can also be customised from the How to Play screen.
Hopefully at least someone here will find some enjoyment from this...
It took about three months to make, and everything in it is mine. Graphics, code, concept, etc.
Notably, I composed the music (as I do, being a composer), and I am particularly proud of it!
I also made the sound effects myself this time, so there is literally nothing in the game that I didn't make myself. Huzzah!
Also, since sometimes I get asked this for some reason: I made it in Flash. Flash games are made in Flash. That's why they're called Flash games. o_O
This game is also nicely sponsored by Kongregate .
If you find any bugs or have suggestions for things that could be changed to make the game more enjoyable (that is, small tweaks, not a change of concept), I'd be glad to hear them because I want to make the following chapters as enjoyable as they can be.

I still haven't finished it yet, but I'm taking a break for now...
You certainly weren't lying when you said it was 'challenging.' Even early on I see you've managed to include a lot of the classic side-scroller puzzles and tricks... Even the way the controls respond takes me back to my youth; you even managed to reproduce the NES/Gameboy/8-Bit SEGA feel.
The game is extremely well designed and thought out, kudos to you...
The music seems familiar... I assume you posted it before? As usual, good stuff...
I'll have to try this again when I have more time to give it the attention it is due...
By the way, how many levels are there? 3? 4? 5? 8?

This current version only includes one single relatively large level, and the other four will be released as separate games.
I didn't originally intend to do this, but when people played the version with multiple levels that was available for testing a while ago, so few people got past the first level that some suggested that I split up the game instead since each level is a large challenge in itself, and they'd be more likely to spend time trying to finish each level if they didn't feel that they had to beat other levels to get to it. Or something.
It's good for me to do that anyway, since I get money from each individual game, so I have a chance of effectively getting five times as much for what's basically one game... o_O

I haven't played a platformer like this in ages! Not since past the dawn of the nintendo and Mario brothers. Wow, I miss the gamer days. *sigh* Curse my lack of proper employment. Ah well.
The game looks good and is definately a fun play, so far. I admit I can barely get halfway through level-one though. I'm abit rusty at the platformer style play anymore. ^_^;;; But By-Jones! I'll figure it out! I'm getting better by the respawn. :,D
The story on the space piratier is interesting, and I'd like to see where it leads in the future. Keep up with the music as well. Brilliant, as it really sets the mood for the game play; in my opinion.
Anywho, off to play again. :3 Abitof an addicting little bugger, that game 'o yours.

Nice music an graphics. Game play is pretty classic and enjoyable... Tough pretty often it is indeed hard so I give up... Not shore how far I got... Don't want to spend that much time on retrying right now...
There was tough one problem but I haven't nailed it down completely. It is connected to being damaged and trying to grab ladder. As far as I understood while you are damaged ladder grabbing does not work but if I pushed up before damage ware of, then it ware of but it does not see that I hold up and does not grab the ladder... So in cases where I fall on spikes and there are only ladders around it seems I need to hit up a lot to not miss the opportunity to grab...
But it was very hard to reproduce and it happens pretty fast so I am not shore that that's truly the problem but it felt as if holding up was not triggering ladder grab sometimes and it seems that it was after being damaged...

I think that when damaged, you can't grab ladders for one second, but you flash for two seconds, which might have been what you were experiencing.

No I remember I was not flashing any more and holding "up" but it was not grabbing the ladder or so it felt 2-3 times... But it was after flashing. But I may be wrong as it is pretty hard to reproduce the problem as I die too fast in those stations Fall, flashed, tried to grab, fall again and died
May be if you give unlimited life and play around for a while you will be able to reproduce it... If not I was wrong... I could gladly try my self but it's hard that way...

It might just be that you're, uh, using the controls improperly or something... o_O
Since I've played through this so many hundred times by now that I've likely done every possible action and I've never experienced that at all...
Yet it could be one of those things that only other players can find since as the developer I 'know where to be gentle'... I'll look into it.

I think I will try to find some place where it will be easier to check it... But not now... Takes too much time

It is definitely hard, but does touch the neural pathways to my nostalgia.
Well done.
