Description This is a picture-in-a-picture concept. In this scene, a parent is alerted by brachiosaurs grazing on nearby trees. I placed a brachiosaur in this picture. See if you can find it. Hint: You may have to download the bigger picture.

The small raptor is a hypothetical dinosaur. From the diversity of organisms and niches we see today, it can be assumed that dinosaur biodiversity far exceeds that evidenced by the fossil record today. Many dinos are portrayed as lumbering hulks or sprinting predators. Some are known to have attained flight. However, arboreal dinos were very common also. Their niches are now taken by sloths, lemurs, and monkeys. These flightless raptors would spend their entire lives in the canopies of dense mountain forests. Their EQ’s would have been the highest of all dromaeosaurs or troodontids. Their larger brains would be necessary to process the greater input of visual and auditory information from their 3-D environment. Some species, such as this little eumaniraptor, had opposable digits and could have in fact picked up twigs for nest material, but also for using simple tools to extricate grubs from their galleries. If it weren’t for the KT extinction, these little dinos may have become the most intelligent creatures on Earth.

Thanks for looking,

Blair

good luck

PS its not a good picture of the brachiosaur, you can probably make out the long neck and tail.

Many thanks Dianna,

Your "Native Americans" piece is very cool, a great concept that is well done. At the thumbnail size, you think its a buffalo, but when you zoom in, you see that its not that simple. Thanks for sharing...

awesome use of atmospheric perspective via blurring. The foreground really pops out!

P.S: I can't find the brachiosaurus... though something on the back of the bottom chick could be a dinosaur but I'm not too sure.

Thanks Adam,

You are a spectacular artist. I love getting feedback from professional artists like yourself. I used to help teach art classes, but chose science as a career. I enjoy drawing whenever I need illustrations for publications or as gifts for Christmas parties. I can't quite place it, but I know I've see your art in a publication. I often read Spectrum and was wondering if you may have had art featured in some of the issues.

Anyhoo, sorry you couldn't find the brachiosaur, a few folks found him. As a further hint, there are actually two exact copies of the brachiosaur eating treetops. The picture isn't very obvious. I had to use the brush tool set to 1 pixel. Thats how small the multitonne animal is.

Good hunting and cheers,

Blair

Haha, thank you! I'm certainly don't consider myself a prefessional (only 17), but I try. I haven't had anything published in the art magazine you spoke of, but maybe they would accept some of my work.

Also, not sure if I'm right, but is the brachiosaur in the reflection on the bird's (archeopteryx?) eye? I see a shape that looks kind of like a long neck creature...

You got it! It was hard to draw such a large dino on such a small area. You can kinda make out the tail and neck, not much else. Your art is very polished and professional, your more surrealistic pieces would be welcome in a publication such as Sprectrum, it showcases up and coming talent in the field of illustration. I buy the books mainly to get inspiration and learn about new styles and techniques. I enjoy art as a hobby. If I ever lose my job, my brother said he'd hire me as an artist for his advertising firm. I told him I work too slow, but his confidence makes me feel good.

Thanks,

Blair

This is true talent - Not only getting the picture to have such fine quality out, but also giving it exact detail through out the art itself. It is so well formed and structured, that the picture stands out highly with realistic features. I'm highly impressed and thus say this gains my deepest respects.

In other words, it is artists like you that inspire me to want to keep at it. So thank you, and I am also amazed by your information based on this reptilian-bird. This picture deserves a 20/10 stars

Very interesting idea, I never really thought about dinosaurs occupying all the niches now filled either with birds or small mammals ...

By the way, what do you call these babies? Chicks doesn't seem totally right. Hatchlings perhaps? And the green in the background, is that the Brachiosaur's skin? If it isn't, I can't see the giant.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Psithyrus In reply to Skyward-Dreamer [2010-08-14 22:48:36 +0000 UTC]

Hi Sky,

Just a neat little thought experiment. I got to thinking about how rare fossilization is and it really only happens in drier arid regions. I was thinking of what other dinos might have existed that lived in habitats where their remains decay quickly, such as a rich forest.

I personally like to call baby dinos chicks, I like to draw them as such, But technically they are often referred to as hatchlings. I have heard some folks call them "kits" as well. Who really cares, anyhoo! They're fun to draw.

Just thinking too much.

Thanks,

Blair

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Skyward-Dreamer In reply to Psithyrus [2010-08-22 22:57:36 +0000 UTC]

Yes of course, and some very good thinking too. It's funny, even though I've read about small dinosaurs who might have climbed into trees to take flight I never really imagine there would be dinousaurs spending their whole lives up trees.

Kits? Never heard that phrase before. You learn something every day, don't you?

And they're very, very nice to watch and admire. Please keep up the wonderful work.

Exactly,

It started out as an archeopteryx hovering over her nest, but a colleage of mine at work was telling me of her pet Orangutan when she was a little girl in Borneo, that got me thinking about dinos in trees, there must have been some.

Thanks,

Now that I wear a wrist brace for my carpal tunnel, I am free to add many more details. I usually step away from the drawing and think about new textures and objects that might fit. The chicks were last minute fluffballs I drew simply for cuteness, as the momma dino was a bit homely.
