Psyraps are mainly quadruplets, right? (Because of the massive front part of body)

as adults they are half and half, the weight of the fur on the tail and the tail itself balances them out.

This is a really nice reference sheet. I have to say that the development of bipedalism over the creatures' lifespan is pretty interesting. Even humans, who start out crawling, aren't truly quadrupedal creatures, so this is pretty unique.

I have a question before I do start fanarting and creating my own psyrap. I would like to know if i did create a psyrap and mistakenly messed up how it's exactly suppose to look, would i get in trouble for it? because I've had problems in the past when i had mistakenly messed up some of the details on a certain species that somebody created and they began to yell at me to either take it down or fix it. i don't want that to happen again, so i just wanted to ask first. <3.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PsyrapMafia In reply to Maxiswarriorparadise [2009-02-02 19:38:29 +0000 UTC]

lol no i wouldnt make a deal out of it. there have been many times that people drew psyraps without lookin at the reference (they were at school or work for example) and it had many things off but they were still pretty much psyraps. plus the psyrap is a species, and like every other species, there will be slightly differing traits and characteristics between each individual, they wouldn't all be exact clones. this refsheet is more like a guide.

oh, thank you very much^^ now i'll feel much better about making fan art and my own psyrap. yes, the tiniest details made the person mad. kinda like their aren't supposed to be any female's at all on the species that she'd made up but i'd made one of them a female, then one other thing i think... anyways, thanks for letting me know^^

well a lone psyrap could be threatened by an achillobator. they are also pretty vulnerable as juveniles. wat psyraps lack in size or height, they make up for in strength and power.

thanks. its hard to pinpoint when i drew my first psyrap becuz they were not always called psyraps. however i have drawn raptor-like, furry, eared creatures with wild markings and colors since i was in elementary school. in middle school i started drawing wolf-raptor and hyena-raptor hybrids. the psychoraptor came from these two concepts. and i would not mind it if u drew freek lol.

Just a few things I want to clarify about my previous post before finishing up: 1) The big game I was referring to included JP3's Parasaurolophus & Corythosaurus. 2) When I said "biggest & baddest", I meant the overall best big game hunters. For example, while Utahraptors are bigger than JP3's Droms, the latter are smarter & hunt in bigger packs. 3) I got the idea for the Drom/hyen/alien hybrid when you brought up Velcirapteryx, reminding me of JP Chaos Effect &, specifically, Compstegnathus (the Compy/Stego/frog hybrid). Alien DNA is to Psyraps what frog DNA is to Compstegnathus's in that alien DNA explains the existence of traits in Psyraps not inherited from Droms or hyenas (the tongue, the tennas, the blue blood, etc). 4) In my previous post, I said "Psyrap", but I meant "Proto-Psyrap" (being that it was the 1st of its kind &, thus, less refined than a true Psyrap).

We last left off w/the initial creation of the Proto-Psyrap. The aliens originally planned on breeding just 1 species to start w/. However, by the time the parent population was released into the wild, the alien civilization was nearing the end of its rope. Upon its destruction, the inhabitants of the unnamed continent were left unmonitored & free to diversify. This was especially true for the Proto-Psyrap, 1 line of which gave rise to the many species/subspecies (whichever you prefer) of true Psyraps. The other line took to the trees, eventually giving rise to the Yez as well as other sapient species/subspecies.

Sorry it took so long to finish relaying my current ideas, but I got really busy in between the writing of this post & my previous post. Anyway, now that I've finally finished, I'm ready to hear what you think after you've had the chance to take it all in.

P.S. I don't know why the alien civilization was destroyed. Maybe the same goofball I referred to in my previous post became their leader & ran the economy into the ground or started a civil war or something.

i guess i came up with them from drawings i use to make when i was a kid of raptor/wolf and raptor/hyena hybrids. i decided to modify them and develop them further into becoming a brand new species so they could be part of the fauna that populates the yez planet. most of their attributes where put there becuz they didnt exist yet (such as the concept of raptors have pawpads or tendrils).

u can see more psyraps at

Note to self: don't use the word "definitely" anymore.

Anyway, do you already have set an explanation for how & why Psyraps came into being? If not, I'd like to suggest 1 now. You see, I was thinking that a race of Drom- & hyena-loving aliens decided to create their own little world (i.e. a continent-sized landmass on their home planet) where Droms & hyenas are the only top predators. The easy part involved beaming up representatives of e/hyena species (as well as their prey) onto their ships, cloning them, & beaming the originals back down to Earth. The hard part involved sneaking disguised aliens onto Earth, collecting fossils of every known Drom species (as well as their prey), & extracting enough DNA for cloning.

To be continued...

PsyrapMafia In reply to JD-man [2008-09-01 17:04:32 +0000 UTC]

Well, psyraps are the result of natural evolution on their earth-like planet

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JD-man In reply to PsyrapMafia [2008-09-01 21:24:12 +0000 UTC]

I'm going to get to that part soon.

Skipping to the part where populations of e/species are released into their respective habitats, the aliens soon realize that there are too many big game animals & not enough big game hunters. Rather than letting their time & energy go to waste by exterminating the excess big game, the aliens decided to make their own superpredators by hybridizing the biggest & baddest Droms (V.antirrhopus sornaensis) w/the biggest & baddest hyenas (C.crocuta). However, during the hybridization process, some goofball contaminated the Drom &/or hyena DNA samples, thus resulting in the 3-way hybrid we all know & love as the Psyrap.

Just 1 more post to go before I've finished relaying my current ideas. Please wait until then to respond to them so that you'll have a complete picture of what I'm saying.

Sorry it took so long to get back to this, but I got busy on Friday & Saturday. Anyway, now is when I make suggestions for the Psyraps themselves, how they came to be, & the world in which they live.

The 1st thing that comes to mind are the Psyraps' upturned toe claws. I know you said that they're for killing prey, but I think it'd be more realistic if Psyrap's used their jaws & teeth for killing prey & their upturned toe claws for intraspecific fighting &/or defense. I think this for the following reasons: 1) Psyraps fit the bill for pursuit-&-bite predators ([link] ), 2) While their skulls are Drom-like, their jaws & teeth are hyena-like, & 3) Their upturned toe claws make better defensive weapons than killing weapons ([link] ). There's also the option of making the Psyraps' upturned toe claws more raptorial, but I doubt you'd consider that. I wouldn't consider it either as that would mean taking away part what makes a Psyrap so unique (plus, the image of a straight-clawed Psyrap has already been ingrained into the memory of every DA member).

I hate to stop now, but I'll definitely continue where I left off later today.

currently [finally] working on remaking the psyrap refsheet, so i was going through everybodys comments to see how i could improve and came back to yours. the claw part i have to agree with. although not as epic as a killing claw, it is definitely more naturally realistic which is my goal for the psyraps makeover. theres no way the psyrap could dig that claw into its prey and try to hang on while it was still alive and not have its own weight cause the toe to come ripping out its socket x_x

JD-man In reply to ??? [2008-08-28 20:52:58 +0000 UTC]

I've been meaning to get back to you w/more suggestions for updating the Psyrap ref sheet as well as suggestions for the world in which the Psyraps live, starting w/the updating stuff.

Is the intelligence of Psyraps based on that of spotted hyenas? If so, than that part can stay the same. If not, however, & they more closely mirror wolves in intelligence, than that would make them & Droms more-or-less even in that respect. You see, according to Larry Witmer, Troodon was "as cunning as a fox", w/a brain structure compatible w/problem-solving.

[link]

The Dromaeosaurus & Velociraptor subfamilies, having scored similarly well on the EQ test ([link] ), would have been similarly intelligent. The same can't be said for the Microraptor & Unenlagia subfamilies, though. It just goes to show how far ahead of his time Robert Bakker is (as well as how much better he knows Droms than any1 else): Raptor Red's intelligence & social habits are based on those of a female golden eagle. As you may remember from a previous post, eagles & hawks are comparable to foxes & wolves in "hunting tactics & cunning intelligence."

That brings me to my next question: in the part about Psyrap & Drom packs, are you comparing the complexity of e/species' society or how e/species would match up pack vs. pack? If the former, than that part can stay the same (minus the mobbing stuff, of course). If the latter, however, than that would make them & Droms more-or-less even in that respect too. You see, while looking up stuff about spotted hyenas on wiki, I read this: "Though adult hyenas physically outmatch wild dogs, a pack of wild dogs can hold it's own against a group of hyenas due to their habit of working more in unison." Again, as you may remember reading in a previous post, the social structure of wolves is "almost identical" to that of Harris's hawks.

Unfortunately, that's as far as I can go w/this for now as this took longer than I originally thought. I'll probably get back to you w/the rest tomorrow.
