psyraps are actually aliens, as the refsheet also states. they are not true dromaeosaurids. they did not evolve to eventually fly.

JD-man In reply to PsyrapMafia [2008-08-27 01:18:56 +0000 UTC]
Actually, neither did dromaeosaurids; in fact, they most likely evolved from a flying ancestor (either Archaeopteryx or a close relative), making them (& troodontids) secondarily flightless. Greg Paul wrote a book about it, called Dinosaurs of the Air: The Evolution & Loss of Flight in Dinosaurs & Birds ([link] ). Also, recent evidence supporting his theory includes the Thermopolis Archaeopteryx specimen ([link] ) & the discovery of quill knobs on Velociraptor ([link] ).

that was still a relatively an unknown and maybe even uncreated theory when i created the basis for the psyraps. when i (finally) get around to creating an 'official' lineage/ancestry tree for the psyraps, i'll be keeping all the new theories about dinosaurs and evolution in mind

Hey, I have a question for you. Do females choose a male in her clan for a mate or does it take time for them to fall in love? I was just curious on how Psychoraptors would choose their mates

PsyrapMafia In reply to dinosapien [2009-03-16 01:19:30 +0000 UTC]
whoa i know this is really really late but i was just going through the comments on the refsheet page to see how i could improve the refsheet and saw that this question wasnt answered.
female psyraps choose mates that live outside the clan (nomads) to prevent inbreeding. however this is speaking for feral psyraps. anthro psyraps would have all the main principles people have, with psyrap traits mixed in. but yea in the "wild" they would choose an older mate that displayed all the properties she thinks would be good for her offsprings genes, and that was also not part of her clan.

Okay, that does make a lot of sense And np that you didn't answer. I thought you might think the question was weird or something, so I didn't expect for you to answer
But thanx for doing so. Basically it makes sense that the female Psyrap would choose a male outside of the clan. Obviously she would try to choose the healthiest, strongest male there is.

I forgot to say this first my raptor is an earth one so has nothing to do with the mammalian version and two I personally think your raptors (droms and Phychos) were transported by aliens to this "Raptor Planet" so while droms come from earth Phychos I beleive have some origin I draw a blank on. Maybe alien experiments run a muck or creatures that have evolved along similar path ways to their earth counterparts like some species have done before (Icthyosaurs and Dolphins).

Now that I'm a little less busy, I can finally get back to you about the other questions & concerns I had about your Psychoraptor Ref.
Firstly, how did you come up with & make the vocalizations?
What's w/the blue blood? How do you explain it evolutionarily (i.e. how & why did nature select for copper-based blood in the descendents of hyenas?)?
Is it that the Yez & psychoraptors evolved from a common ancester similarly to how humans & apes (respectively) evolved?
In the section about hands, you refer to the hand claws of dromaeosaurs as "talons." "Talons" refer to the claws of (modern) raptors, which are rounded in shape for piercing & holding prey (like the sickle claws of dromaeosaurs). In contrast, the hand claws of dromaeosaurs were flattened like blades for slashing & tearing. I'm sorry if I sound nit-picky, but it's just 1 of those little things that get to me.
Lastly, when I recommended tha you refer to Henry Gee & Luis Rey's A Field Guide to Dinosaurs for information on deinonychus packs, I forgot to recommend that you refer to Robert Bakker's Raptor Pack as well. Again, it's speculation, but who better to speculate on the behavior of dromaeosaurs than Robert Bakker?

PsyrapMafia In reply to JD-man [2008-06-09 23:57:35 +0000 UTC]
most of the sounds i put together myself in a program called audacity. they are made up of several different sounds, both natural and artificial. one sound clip is a slightly altered version of a sound made by an unknown animal in a song i have.
the blue blood was to emphasize that not only are they from a different planet, but they are from the same planet as the yez species. i figure the reason for the color blue will be a mixture between evolutionary needs and the elements in the air and atmosphere.
yez and psyraps did descend from a common ancester - a dromaeosaurid. one set off to live in the trees and eventually became one of the many sapient species on the planet (such as the yez), the other stayed on the ground and became mammalian like, filling the niche of "large and dangerous predator", such as the wolf or cougar.
as far as talons, ive always heard dinosaur and bird nails be referred to as talons instead of claws.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
JD-man In reply to PsyrapMafia [2008-06-14 03:43:02 +0000 UTC]
In ref to the blue-blood: So, basically, it has to do w/yez & psyraps being from an alien planet, right? That's good enough for me.
In ref to the yez/psyrap ancestor: Just so we're clear, you're saying that yez & psyraps are mammal-like dinosaurs, not dinosaur-like mammals, right? It's just that, in their ref sheets, I've seen them referred to as either/or. That'll be something else to fix the next time you update said ref sheets. That reminds me, when you do get to the update, I recommend adding Agility to the Drom vs. Psyrap section. Not only is it just as important as speed & strength, but, w/out it, said section is a bit 1-sided in favor of psyraps (no offense).
In ref to the talons: I often hear "talons" used indiscriminantly in ref to the claws of predatory dinosaurs (besides raptors) as well. Like I said before, it's just 1 of those little things that get to me. Personally, I try to use it only in ref to the hand claws of allosaurs & the sickle claws of dromaeosaurs. Again, sorry for sounding nit-picky.

For my last post, I just have a few questions about psychoraptors.
How did you think up such a creature?
What non-fictional mammals are psychoraptors most closely related to?
Is it that the young are quadrupedal & the adults are bibedal or that they're all quadrupedal when running & bipedal when walking?
What do psychoraptors use their hand claws for?
What do psychoraptors use their enlarged foot claws for?

PsyrapMafia In reply to JD-man [2008-04-27 01:03:49 +0000 UTC]
The psychoraptor concept began when I was in middle-school drawing wolf-raptor hybrids. This turned into hyena-raptor hybrids, and then soon became it's own species instead of a mixbreed. I'm currently working on a graphic novel and needed wild animals to populate this fictional world, the psyrap is one of them. They are sort of like the equivalent to lions or wolves, as far as their legends and popularity goes on their planet. Inspirations for their development came not only from evolution, but also from the juggalo community, who sometimes paint their faces and wear clown like colors. The tennas or tendrils were added for the sole purpose of further separating them from any other raptor species or character. Finally, they are raptor-based because dromaeosaurs are my favorite dinosaurs (and psyraps are evolved from extremely early variants of dromaeosaurids). In fact, when the species branched off, while one side went and became the psyrap, the other continued to evolved into the large feathered dromaeosaur more familiar to archaeologists. Without the occurrence of an extinction, these dinosaurs went arboreal, filling in the niche primates did on earth. Finally they went on to become sapient.
the non fictional mammal psyraps are most closely related to are spotted hyenas.
The young are born strictly as quads, then as their rear legs mature they are able to alter between biped and quad. Adults usually run quad.
The hand claws have evolved to aid in quad running as opposed to grasping. It acts as an extension to the toe.
The foot claws are suppose to be for disembowelling. Thier powerful hind legs, as well as the straight angle of the claw, allow for a more efficient/direct stabbing motion. This is done AFTER the prey is taken down.
I've meant to add modification's to the psyraps to fix the "grasping" problem. I added a 4rth finger but forgot to make it higher up on the hand as well as mention that its curved instead of straight. I've been neglecting the psyrap's development since I debuted the yez ref

Now it's time for the criticism. I noticed that, in the part about psychoraptor and dromaeosaur packs, you used information from the part of the dromaeosaur Wiki page that made reference to the Brinkman & Roach paper. In said paper, Brinkman & Roach argue that 1) Deinonychus & other dromaeosaurs did not hunt cooperatively, either hunting alone or mobbing, and 2) Deinonychus & other dromaeosaurs were cannibals. While I don't have problem w/them arguing in favor of cannibalism in Deinonychus (a common behavior in both extant & extinct predators), I do have a problem w/them arguing against cooperative hunting in Deinonychus.
First of all, Brinkman & Roach argue that a lone Deinonychus could have killed a much larger Tenontosaur with its foot claws. "A leaping attack might have even been strong enough to eviscerate the victim. After all, ostriches and cassowary birds today are capable of disemboweling large adversaries, including lions and humans."
The problem w/this arguement is that Kenneth Carpenter had already invalidated it 9 years prior when he said, "the reports of dis-emboweling of humans or lions by ratite birds cited by OSTROM (1969) seems to be rare and unusual events. The disemboweling is the result of the bird's great mass behind the kick rather than cutting by the claws because none of the pedal claws bear any re-semblance with the laterally compressed sickle claw of the dromaeosaurid foot. The light weight of most dromaeosaurids (30-80kg, OSTROM, 1990) makes it doubtful that they had enough mass to effectively disembowel their prey with their sickle claw."
Another argument made by Brinkman & Roach in favor of solitary/mobbing behavior in dromaeosaurs was that of solitary/mobbing behavior in extant archosaurs (specifically, raptors & crocodiles). In fact (contrary to what Brinkman & Roach say), cooperative hunting is important for many raptors, and raptors are probably the best analogues for dromaeosaur behavior. Robert Bakker put it best when he said, "In all details of their body construction--hips, knees, ankles, feet and hands, eyes and brain--raptors are designed like ground-running super-hawks." You can read more about cooperative hunting in raptors by clicking on the following link:
[link] agewanted=all
Crocodiles, though not in the same league as raptors (both intellectually & socially), are also a lot more intellectually/socially complex than often given credit for. In fact (again, contrary to what Brinkman & Roach say), cooperative hunting in crocodiles was used as evidence in favor of cooperative hunting in theropods in The Truth About Killer Dinosaurs. Examples of this behavior in crocodiles & other crocodilians can be read by clicking on the following link:
[link]
Lastly, as someone who uses Wikipedia as a source of dromaeosaur information, you're probably familiar w/the dromaeosaur trackways discovered in Shandong, China, in which six dromaeosaurs walked side-by-side in the same direction. As stated in the dromaeosaur Wiki article, "the trackways clearly do not represent hunting behavior," which is all the more evidence in favor of cooperative hunting in dromaeosaurs. You see, had a hunt taken place right then & there, it could be argued that the trackways represented the mobbing behavior you made reference to. Instead, the trackways are representative of (for lack of a better term) hanging-out behavior, and as Robert Bakker put it, "predators don't usually hang out in groups if they don't hunt together."
In short, the Brinkman & Roach paper is not a good source of information on hunting behavior in Deinonychus & other dromaeosaurs for two reasons: 1) their argument against cooperative hunting in Deinonychus & other dromeaosaurs is bad (for reasons already stated), and 2) The evidence in favor of cooperative hunting in Deinonychus & other dromeaosaurs is much stronger than the evidence against it. For more infomation on the evidence in favor of cooperative hunting in Deinonychus, click on the following link:
[link]
Of particular interest are paragraphs 8-11.
Also, if you ever do decide to modify the pack vs. pack part of your refsheet, I'd recommend referring to Henry Gee's A Field Guide to Dinosaurs: The Essential Handbook for Travelers in the Mesozoic for information on deinonychus packs. It may be speculation, but it's better than any so-called "evidence" used by Brinkman & Roach.

I currently own two species with ref sheets (the yez and psyraps), and it's very taxing trying to keep both within the boundaries of science and evolution, despite hours upon hours of research.
