Description
#9: Flour Sack jumping. I wanted to play around a little bit with some more stylized animation, hence the smear frame style of jump that looks like time has skipped; it's a style I'd like to attempt more often. Took me about 3 to 4 hours to make.<- Previous Animation || Next Animation ->
After realizing just how inept I am at animating anything other than an ambiguous, amorphous blobs, I decided to go on a bit of an animation pilgrimage. I'm going to be plowing through a list of 51 animation exercises (found at the very excellent animatorisland.com) to try and get myself going. I've found it's easier to just follow a list than it is to try and think up little tasks for myself. I'll also be timing how long it takes for me to complete the exercise. I theorize that this will encourage me to stop being a lazy twit and letting myself get distracted by stuff. The list is as follows...
Level 1 Exercises
Level 3 Exercises
Level 4 Exercises

Hey, look. I'm doing these exercises too.
I haven't posted anything yet and I'm just starting up (I'm on the brick today).
Wishing you the best, fellow animator. Git gud, my friend. Git gud.

Thanks a lot, and best of luck to you as well! Hopefully you make better time than I have so far

Looks good! I'm not really animator (even though I animate all the time) but looks like you put a lot of effort into it. Even how the shadow lightens when it's off the ground. I guess the only detail I would have tried to add would be when it starts the jump and when it lands, have the bag squish down a little bit so it doesn't feel as stiff. Otherwise it's a very solid and expressive animation.

Thanks for the observations! I was definitely a bit skint with the deformation of the character. Originally this was just a really rough pencil test for motion blur which just happened to look kind of like a jump after I'd finished planning it. In general my character's are a bit stiff as I don't have a good sense of how to deform them while still maintaining form. I'll definitely try and loosen things up for my future stuff
