Description
#10: Flour Sack falling. Maaan, this damn sack...I, for the umpteenth time, leapt into animating without planning out the keyframes properly, as it was originally just a bit of a pencil test. This resulted in a massive amount of redrawn frames to try and get the spacing right. It was a huge drag, and it ended up being my longest animation so far (79 frames drawn). Still not entirely happy with it but I'm just about sick of drawing this little guy, so I'm kicking it out the door. One more exercise to go and then I'm on to Level 2!
<- Previous Animation || Next Animation ->
After realizing just how inept I am at animating anything other than an ambiguous, amorphous blobs, I decided to go on a bit of an animation pilgrimage. I'm going to be plowing through a list of 51 animation exercises (found at the very excellent animatorisland.com) to try and get myself going. I've found it's easier to just follow a list than it is to try and think up little tasks for myself. I'll also be timing how long it takes for me to complete the exercise. I theorize that this will encourage me to stop being a lazy twit and letting myself get distracted by stuff. The list is as follows...
Level 1 Exercises
Level 3 Exercises
Level 4 Exercises
Made using Krita!

Are there any other animation challenges that you know of??

Not too many, since this is the first one I've taken on. There's a few animation clubs around on the net that you can sign up for or casually take part in whatever challenge they're doing. There's one called the 11 second club that runs a monthly competition, and it's one of the more well known ones. I'm sure there's a few groups on DA that do animation challenges/competitions (something I'd like to try for my group at some point).
But if you want more list type things, all you need to do is look up 'animation exercise list' on Google and you'll get a bunch of stuff. Nothing too special about them really, since the value of any of these lists is almost completely dependent on what the animator chooses to do with it.

I love this!! I help out with the Krita project. I was wondering if we could use this animation on the Krita 3.0 release page showing off some animations people are making with it. It would be great to include this.

Of course! I'd be honored to have my work there!
And thanks for the great work so far. Can't wait to have a go at 3.0 once the OpenGL stuff is sorted

The results of spending hours upon hours fiddling with tiny little movements. It's a glamorous life :3

Thanks! I can't imagine what it would be like to do frame by frame animation traditionally, but I'd certainly look forward to seeing what you come out with. Good luck!

Thanks for the kind words! As for tutorials, there's already a few out there about animating with Krita (there's a fairly good rundown of how to use it on the download page); I don't think anything I would have to say would be adding much, but i'll give you a few links to the ones I found helpful. As for getting a nice smooth animation, that's more about understanding the basics of animation and a lot of trial and error. In your case I think the best thing would be to get comfortable with the features of Krita by doing some drawings and small, easy animations (like a ball bouncing). Once you're settled and have a grasp on most of the features it'll be much easier to focus on your animation skills!

I could go on, but I don't want to make this a huge wall of text. Hope this helps you out a bit, and don't be a stranger if you have any questions or want an opinion on your animations

That fall is too funny where its stumpy little legs just kind of flop after the rest of it does XD Your flour sack anims are way more awesome than they have any right to be

Very adorable, especially when it landed on its "bum" towards the end. Worth all your effort and time! *thumbs up*

Thanks! The 'bum' landing actually gave me a fair bit of grief when I was animating it, so I'm glad you like it

I love the smoothness of the little sack. Nicely done. That list is interesting as well. I should concider using it as well

Thanks! Definitely give it a try. It forces you to make conscious decisions about how much time you're willing to invest in a single animation and how interesting you can make it, especially if you have any intention of making it through the whole list.
