Description Still first day of class; after the break, three miscellaneous shapes with white tablecloths draped over them. Again, using line only, and working from general shape to more and more detail. This took about 45 minutes.

All the little folds go somewhere, connect to something, and form the edges of specific, geometric shapes; but there are hundreds of them.

Criminy, this is a realistic... I may have made a mistake leaping straight to life-drawing classes without a better foundation. Even without completed shading, it's still perfectly clear how the fabric drapes and folds. Excellent job.

Honestly I'm not sure yet how these basic exercises will affect my own drawings of characters and such... I haven't had enough time between classwork to try anything of my own, heh. There's still a lot to learn in life drawing that's unique to life drawing, because as humans we're generally wired to detect any anomalies in how humans look. These abstract shapes have no shortcuts, but neither do they have preconceived molds that we can detect. Critiquing them means all we have to grasp is the fundamentals: does it have depth, do the shapes make sense, is everything placed before or behind what it ought to be.

Of course, the good news is it's easy to practice. Crumple up a ball of paper, or throw a plain-colored sheet or towel onto the tabletop, and go to it. ; >
