Description Human faces being a weak point of mine, I've been practicing drawing from paused DVDs. Some of them look like a two-year-old's nightmare; but this one turned out wonderfully and I'm still not sure why. From Sin City.

Cheap mechanical pencil on random copy paper, 5 minutes.

If faces are difficult for you, that'd explain why I don't see many in your gallery.

I like the expression and lighting on this one. I particularly like how you managed the naturally recessed areas of the face.

Doh - and I forgot to say. Thank you, and yes the expression turned out wonderfully on this one... but why? It barely has any lines at all. Something about the arc of the lips, for instance, has to be *exactly* right for it to work. If the center part were not so thick, or curved more sharply, or impinged on the lower lip curve, it'd be completely lost. I swear the human face is the most unforgiving shape there is.

That's it exactly. Most of my projects that require a human face are still languishing half-finished, because it is just so huge an obstacle. And of course, the less I draw them, the less opportunity I have to improve. I'm very good at expressing through body language, which doesn't help as it gives me a built-in crutch, heh.

But I have a WIP that absolutely requires human facial expression, so I've spent pages and pages practicing.
