Description Hello yes I am garbage who decided that she ships these two and is probably making them act out of character, but I desperately needed more Black Beetle/Reach Scientist stuff on the internet.
Also I tried a different thing with shading and the line art, so maybe that'll show?

(also how do backgrounds work?)

If I squint, I'm sure I can see this working. I mean Black Beetle did choose to save her from being captured during the Summit episode.

There's that, and also in their previous interactions (on the Reach ship and the Warworld) they seemed to get along pretty well. Maybe for some people that wouldn't be enough for a pairing, and honestly, I didn't originally ship them. But since I've been writing my fanfic and exploring more into their characters, it looked more and more to me that they could be more than just friends. o3o

I honestly didn't get that vibe off them, but then again they never really had a problem with each other until that last scene when the Reach was being escorted by the Green Lanterns to Oa. (Remember? The Scientist was playing the I told you line and the males just glared at her to shut her up.)

I'd say it was more of a mutual understanding and respect of their positions and ranks, maybe? I mean whose to say that Aliens don't have their own sense of attraction. Could be that the Reach, being a society of military conquerors and highly advanced technological achievers, the strongest pair up with the most intelligent in order to ensure superior offspring. You know, survival of the fittest only taken to the optimum level? It would make sense.

I mean there was obviously no love loss, seeing as the Ambassador wouldn't listen to reason whenever the Head Scientist tried to warn him. And Black Beetle wasn't shy about questioning the Ambassador actions on several matters when their plan hit several walls.Β

Come to think of it... If Black Beetle could have easily declare the Ambassador unfit to lead a campaign the way he did... Doesn't that mean the Reach military have more authority than their form of government? I mean sure the guy screwed up several times before Black did it, and there was some acquisition code in play, but still, to do it just like that? And without any complaint from the rest of their soldiers too.

No, yeah, I remember that last scene (the scenes where the Scientist gets abused are some of the saddest for me in that show). Like I said, a lot of this came from my personal exploration with the characters from writing my fanfic. It just kinda happened. But it could easily be what you said: mutual understanding. And the ending scene with them certainly doesn't help the idea of them being a couple.
(because of that, and because I don't like to force my ships on people, I'm trying hard to make their relationship in my fic be able to pass as a romance or a friendship depending on who reads it (not that it's the main point of the plot XP ))

I don't even think that friendship even exist as a word on their planet let alone the concept, but since your idea is an AU, it ought to work just fine. That's the great thing about AU based stories, you can totally see how far going the exact opposite would go with a character.

You could go with the Transformer G1 idea with the romance between Optimus Prime and Elita-1. They are obviously deeply in love and would like nothing more than to be together, but because of their duty to their cause and dedication to the freedom of their world, they force themselves to stay the cool, control, disciplined leaders they were design to be because of the war. (At least until it finally comes to an end that is.) Its a sacrifice they put themselves through for the good of their troops, and the Autobot code.

I recommend real subtle actions like, long silent glances when no one is looking, or a slight change in vocal tone when they are not on duty, or maybe even something like they each are wearing something small and identical, like a metal wrist bands on opposite arms, or half of a medallion that fits together. You know, something people would over look the majority of the time unless someone actually pays attention.

Like I said, their relationship isn't the main point of the plot, so hopefully if I hint to it it won't be too distracting. (and I am trying to keep my story as canon as possible )

(thank you for the suggestions ^_^ )

Subtlety can be a bit tricky. I've practiced with it in my stories from time to time. If you'd like a sample, here:

I wrote this a while back in response to a friend's writing out a cene I would have like to see their OC star in. It introduces a character I've been fleshing out for some time. Watch the interaction between her and Jazz and see if the way they act around each other is how you would want to play the relationship between Silver and Missionary.

D'aww, I'll ship it! They could share their grievances about working under the Ambassador. I agree, too, these characters are quite under-appreciated and need more fan-works out there.

I'm not sure what you did differently in the technical application, but the artwork is great! I particularly love the coloring, it's very smooth and precise! You always do Black Beetle so fantastically well, I must say. Man, never thought I'd hear myself say this about the Reach but this picture is so sweet and touching.

Backgrounds, ugh! They're like their own area of art and I have yet to get a handle on BG-making skills. I guess you could just manipulate screen captures like I've seen base-makers do? Anyway, I like the one you created here. The colors are quite pretty and there's a cool use of textures. Plus there's a sense of perspective with those lines, which also feels like a definite enclosure, walls and floor and such. Sometimes simple is best.

Honestly, I didn't originally ship them, but since I've been writing of my fic I got to explore their characters more and the way they interacted, and the ship just kind of snuck up on me. XP (speaking of which, I REALLY need to finish up the editing of chp 2 DX )

I read somewhere (actually, I'm pretty sure it was in the comments on one of your drawings) that you shouldn't use solid black for the outlines, so I used colors that were darker than the ones that the characters are wearing.

Yesssss, submit to the Reach and them being uncharacteristically adorable.

I just tried my best to imitate the walls and floor of the Reach ship. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, actually. o3o

Don't you love when that happens? It's amazing how much more you can connect to characters through writing about them, watching their world through their eyes. So awesome! And I think there's definitely an unspoken camaraderie betweenΒ DawurΒ and the Scientist; he just probably wouldn't admitΒ it, being such a tough guy. And c'mon, I'm sure as far as Reach men go, he's pretty studly and gets lots of adoring eyes.

Ah, yeah, that might have come from my own attempts at digital. I guess it's an illustrator's trick to do outlines in color, not old-fashioned black. I think you managed it well, picked appropriate coordinating colors, because the lines are there but they're not obtrusive. I kinda struggle with choosing a darker shade, so kudos! It's great you're exploring new techniques.

YES! I think the background looks cool and definitely mimics the organic-like mecha of the Reach's technology.

He at least stands out the most when you see him with the rest of the Reach (considering that he literally towers over everyone else, lawl).

Though I'm not sure if it's the best thing if I'm connecting with characters who are mass-murderers and sadists >_> (Milena Island and that beginning scene of "Before the Dawn"). Then again, it would be boring if ALL the characters ever were was "evil". At the very least, the Scientist showed emotions that I can relate to (since we can see that she is scared of the Ambassador).

I'm really trying to improve my artwork, so I'm glad that I'm going in the right direction. And especially when I found myself really happy with how this turned out, I'm happy that other people are liking it. I still struggle a little with shading, but still pretty happy with it here.

Haha, that's absolutely true. He's a giant among the Reach. XD As for their sadistic and bloody ways, I can't help but think they are aliens. I mean, if they don't regard pain or death like we do, then it's not a negative trait to them. They'd probably laugh at the term "inhumane" because they're not human. It's the same reason I find it unfair when people call Starfire a slut; on her planet it's acceptable to be sexually open, so who are we to question her culture, you know?

But I agree, it's exciting to have characters that portray different, darker characteristics. It brings a level of intensity to the stories, and actually makes you think a bit more. I like that you put evil in quotes, too, since I also don't agree anyone is ever truly "evil". Everyone has their reasons and motives. Oh man, I felt bad for the scientist because she obviously knew what she was doing but the Ambassador would not listen to her, and the poor thing kept trying even when he threatened.

You're definitely on the right path with your artwork! Improvements may not happen overnight, but I can see how much effort you're putting into your pieces and I love to see you trying new things. This is definitely a piece to be proud of, and I just love your use of color. Shading is tricky for me, too, but I think it's because I don't start out with a saturated palette, and I'm wary of lights (which means I end up lacking contrast). I think you do a good job at cel-shading, it's vibrant yet not over-worked. You've got a great foundation. You'll get there, never fear!

Pretty much the Reach just don't consider humans to be on their level. Nor do they think what they're doing is "evil". They clearly have more advanced technology, and think that their way of life is the way everyone else should live. Or it's just a thing of "let's take over everything because we're awesome". I don't know if it would be correct to say they think they're "helping" the planets that they're taking over, but they certainly believe that they're way of life is best. (but again, humans are probably on the same level as animals to them, so that would be why they aren't concerned when a test subject dies).

It is my firm belief that if the Scientist had been in charge of the invasion, the Reach would have won.

Thank you! I'm really glad to hear that said about my art!
