Description
You know, I'm having a bad habit of glorifying the evil arch-nemeses of Ash and Sonic right on the cusp of their anniversaries, Strolling Down Villainy Lane being a prime example. But hey, the Sonic Channel website plastered Eggman all over the place for Sonic's 20th anniversary date (believe me, I saw it), so I guess it evens out.For the official 20th anniversary of the Pokémon anime coming soon, I've made this pic. It's Jessie, James and Meowth looming over the Viridian City Pokémon Center as they're about to unleash their great Pokémon heist...with an ominous shadow eclipsing the full moon...
Much like what I was feeling while making Prologue: A Destroyed Destiny , this is both a prediction for Pokémon the Movie 20: I Choose You and something I admittedly made out of "fearful celebratory frustration" for Team Rocket finally defeating Ash in SM012.
In the former case, the Japanese TCG decks featuring Ho-oh and Necrozma set to release this summer may point to Necrozma being involved in the plot, seeing as how it's rumored to "come from a world in the distant past", which is when this movie is taking place. If I am indeed correct in assuming I Choose You will NOT be a retelling of the Original Series but a Turtles Forever/Sonic Generations plot, I'm expecting the antagonist to use it to change history, be it a totally new bad guy or Team Rocket as depicted, much like how Eggman used the Time Eater.
As for why it's a "fearful celebratory frustration", I am well aware that what I'm about to say may garner me hate comments or cause me to lose followers, but I will say this. Team Rocket has been relentlessly pursuing our heroes for 20 years, comically failing each and every time. That's the formula. Villains like Wario, Dr. Eggman, Dick Dastardly from Wacky Races, Discord from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors (even if it's just for one movie) and even Kaa from The Jungle Book are kinda the same way. They're amongst some of my favorite villains because they just so delight in how evil they are and have so much fun with it they pretty much steal the show, sometimes literally. You would think Jessie, James and Meowth would be sitting right up there with this treacherous troupe as they fit the aforementioned qualities to a tee.
They would if it weren't for one BIG problem.
Giovanni.
If Jessie, James and Meowth were out to steal Pokémon for themselves or were on their own, I'd totally adore them even more, and it'd excuse why they'd bother to follow Ash across several regions to steal Pikachu, as well as other Pokémon. Despite TRio's comical attitudes, their care for their own Pokémon, and even teaming up with Ash to fight greater threats, we all have to remember that these three are part of a global organization dedicated to exploiting Pokémon and controlling them to conquer the world. And Giovanni is the higher-up leader of this organization, and he is NOTHING like TRio: cold, ruthless, merciless, and willing to destroy anyone who defies him or Team Rocket. He sees Pokémon as nothing but weapons for war and his organization is trained to believe the same way. So if Team Rocket really IS successful in defeating Ash AND stealing his Pokémon for Giovanni, this anime can turn REALLY dark REALLY fast. This is why I'd like TRio more if they worked on their own; if they actually won, their likability wouldn't decrease quite as dramatically. Some fans claim that the Pokémon anime can only end if Ash wins a Pokemon League, which I'm not TOO bothered by whether or not it ever happens. But I believe the REAL ending is the downfall of the Team Rocket organization at the hands of our heroes, like some sort of never-ending war
You may take this as a reason for me to hate TRio, but actually, I think that's exactly what the Pokémon anime intends it's target audience to feel about them; a love-hate relationship. Nonetheless, TRio STILL has the delightful charm amongst the likes of Eggman, Dastardly and may others that make us love them despite the fact they're bad guys. As an arch-enemy to Ash, they're perfect. To commit evil on their own whims would make them even more perfect. They really are "the best at being the worst."
And before anyone goes nuts, I know other likable villains had more evil higher-ups that make them pursue the heroes, such as King Dedede and Escargoon from eNeMeE in Kirby: Right Back At Ya, Dark Million from Black Shadow in F-Zero: GP Legend, etc., possibly rendering my argument invalid. But here's the thing: those shows knew when and how to stop when the time was right. Pokémon has no end in sight, and thus, the criinal organization dedicated to exploiting and controlling the Pokémon we love so much lives on. Giovanni would probably sum it up like this:
: This isn't over. As long as Pokémon live on this planet, it will NEVER be over. No matter how many times our plans fail, we shall simply strike back, again and again, until you eventually concede defeat. Because Team Rocket has the one thing your "bonds" with your Pokémon can never even HOPE to achieve: IMMORTALITY.

If Necrozma is hinted to appear in the Movie, I'd be hyped. Guess we'll know for sure if it does come true.

I get the feeling the 20th movie will be half-reboot half retelling. I wonder if we'll see Misty or Brock or the old VAs at all. As for Giovanni I was always under the impression that, barring B/W and other cases, he used the trio to keep Ash and friends busy while his other forces did more work XD; The amount of times Ash and co. ran into other TR members is pretty low compared to Jessie, James, and Meowth.

I really like your concept of a Sonic Generations-esque plot. Sadly, after watching the first trailer, I doubt it'll happen. It gives me some ideas for a fanfiction I'm working on, however...

A great piece of work for Team Rocket. Also, We won't know how the 20th Pokémon movie I Choose You will turn out until this summer, I guess. And I wouldn't be surprised on how the English version will turn out. Plus, imagine what would happen if the first season of Pokémon was rebooted.
