Description *Edit*: I'm aware that 'Blast Man' is now an official Mega Man 11 robot master. I'll get around to re-naming this guy eventually, but bear in mind that this was created and drawn long before Mega Man 11's announcement.

Sometimes I can't help but be a fanboy.  I always thought I'd grow out of it. I'm beginning to think I never will.

I've been mulling over this design for a long time, and he's gone through some iterations (you can see some of them in my scrapbook). On the whole, I'm pleased with this one. Shading's all over the place though. I'm really out of practice.

Blast Man is a concept demolitions bot, not unlike Bomb Man. Constructed by a young, independent roboticist from Mexico out of a desire to help his beleaguered community. Too many underfunded construction projects have left a blight on the town, and with no reliable means of removing them.  Blast Man was constructed to help clear these abandoned projects to further development. However, the roboticist was not a very skilled programmer. He sought desperately for assistance in this area, but no one of any real skill or notoriety wanted to be involved in the project, knowing Wily's penchant for... conscripting robots such as these to his cause. They deemed the roboticist- an unknown who's skill/background could not be certified- as a political liability in case things went south. In desperation to help his small community the man went ahead and programmed the robot himself, doing his best to study up on the works of the more famous roboticists whom he idolized (Dr. Light in particular) and mimic them.

As a result, Blast Man comes off as a bit eccentric and a little TOO eager to do his job. The robot certainly enjoys watching things go 'boom' and anyone who works with him can't help but feel nervous. Nevertheless, his track record remained pristine due to the very carefully constructed programming by his creator to avoid unnecessary incidents. This results in Blast Man having a bit of a conflicting personality, as his eccentricities often clash with the safety measures in place. He wants to blow something up, but is prevented from doing so until everything is checked in triplicate. If there is ANY danger of a human being caught in the blast radius, he refuses to set off the charges, no matter how much he wants to.  This leaves him impatient and annoyed by the humans he works with as they often ignore common safety protocols or perform them in a less-than-satisfactory manner.

Though the explosives he uses (manufactured on-site via the demolitions bag on his back and delivered via the slots on either side directly into his waiting hands) resemble typical dynamite, they are, in fact, a much more modern and stable compound not unlike a plastic explosive. He can trigger them either remotely, or via the plunger on top of his head. He prefers the use of the plunger, as he feels it's more dramatic, and will often encourage another to push/pull it down for him, though he can do it himself. He especially loves to let the local children do so, though these are reserved for moments of celebration (he's pretty good with the fireworks) or extremely small projects, and always from a safe distance.

Still, while the humans of his town are grateful for his help, they can't help but feel worried about his quirks. They remain reassured by his track record all the same.

I made a quite similar concept with Timer man, if you put a Timer on his chest I think he would be fitting for the name, he would definitely be better than mine.

You can name him Dynamite Man? There's Dyna Man from the Mega Man I DOS game who is similar. He throws sticks of dynamite and his Special Weapon is the Nuclear Detonator which actually sets off dynamite explosives not nuclear explosions. Or, as Capcom is doing with those DOS Robot Masters recycling them into the classic series i.e. Wave Man, Oil Man, Blade Man, Torch Man; just call him Dyna Man and have at it.

pulmonox In reply to ArjaySKing [2018-10-08 05:29:49 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that one's been suggested before. I'm mostly hesitant due to, well... the aforementioned 'Dyna Man' from the DOS game as well as it's similarity to 'Dynamo Man' from Mega Man and Bass.

I'm probably going to go with 'Demo[lition] Man' as that one's not taken yet.

Demo Man would be a good fit, as well. I say go for it.

pulmonox In reply to WobblewokGaming [2018-10-05 20:35:07 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I'm quite aware. If you'll check dates, you'll notice that this was drawn and submitted long before Mega Man 11 was ever announced, and he has existed as a concept even before then.

Such is the case with 'Original Character' Robot Master concepts. I also had prior concepts for Blade Man and Strike Man that, while created prior to it's own creation, were, of course, negated by Mega Man 10.  I'm sure there are many such OC's that have had to go through changes (such as 'Trinitro Man' in Mega Man Unlimited after Nitro Man became a thing in 10).

I haven't come up with a replacement name yet. I'll get around to it eventually.

WobblewokGaming In reply to pulmonox [2018-10-05 23:33:09 +0000 UTC]

My ideas would be;

Bomber Man (not as In the game Bomberman)

Boom Man

Burst Man

Dyna Man (play on Dynamite)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pulmonox In reply to WobblewokGaming [2018-10-05 23:59:12 +0000 UTC]

All thought of, but...

'Bomber Man' is just derivative of 'Bomb Man'

I don't find 'Boom Man' very fitting for what kind of character he is. He's more meant for demolitions than outright explosions.

'Burst Man' is already taken (see Mega Man 7)

And 'Dyna Man' sounds too much like 'Dynamo Man' from Mega Man and Bass.

I'm thinking of 'Demo Man' but then there's Team Fortress 2 and that old movie. Still, it's not in use as far as the Mega Man franchise is concerned.

Yeah... didn't find out about that until the concept had been more-or-less developed. Ah well. I figured that their motifs were different enough (one using sound, the other using explosives) that it didn't bother me as much as it probably should have.

Thanks for the comment though, glad you liked it!

This is truly amazing! The plunger that seems to be remote to his Dynamites, his color scheme, his head, His Bio seems to be interesting if I do say so myself. And his character where he volunteer kids to help blow things up. Robot Masters with a backpack-esque on their backs just grabs me and blow my mind.

I like his detonator design, he look great. The color scheme is perfect.

But I'm not too keen on the HUGE backpack, it looks like a... baggy backpack. Perhaps the backpack should be modified like how he dispenses his dynamites, or reduce the bag's size and just make it part of his design. If you take a look at Bombman, he just (idk) get bombs in his hand in thin air.

If you could make him have some dynamite sticks on his fore arms, then it form a dynamite bunch so he can get hold of it right away. I'm not imagining him reaching back into his bag for those. For the sticks you could add something like tapes around the bunch so it wouldn't look plain dynamite - www.pubzi.com/f/th-Dynamite.pn…

Just constructive criticism, no offense

pulmonox In reply to ZynkOxhide [2016-02-29 21:09:05 +0000 UTC]

The bag itself is reminiscent of old demolitions bags from WW2 and Vietnam, which were quite large and baggy. Personally, I like it being a little bigger, as it gives him a little more 'weight', which most explosive based Robot Masters tend to have. In-universe explanation is that his creator did not have all the top-of-the-line robotics manufacturing equipment at hand, and was unable to make things quite as efficient as he might have liked.

I like the idea of adding tape around the bunches though. I really should've thought of that.

Thanks for the input.

I know I've said this before, but I really love the design of this guy! It's nice to see him in full color! As much as I loved the hazard stripes, I think it's a nice call toning them down. As their purpose is to call attention, they would look too distracting / obnoxious if liberally applied. Now he looks much more balanced. And I'm glad you kept the backpack. It gives him a pretty good bulky profile. Not to mention, the polygonal straps add a good natural looking flare to his design. I do hope you make more OC RMs. This is really great!

pulmonox In reply to imbisibol [2015-11-16 22:38:45 +0000 UTC]

Much appreciated! He's actually probably one of my more unique designs that would actually fit within the Classic Universe. And yes, I agree with your comment on the hazard stripes, which is why I went back on the idea to also apply them to his lower leg armor. I compromised and added a few to his head, which is where most people would be looking when addressing him anyway.  And yes, I felt the backpack really helped. I ditched the sidebag idea in preference to it. the 'straps' over his shoulders are actually a part of his chest armor, only made to appear to be part of the pack, which itself is a part of his design. He CAN remove it when not on the job, but it's where most of his explosives are manufactured, his designer not having access to the nano-manufacturing technology of most robot masters.

He likes to watch their reactions when the explosives go off, because they react much more than the adults do, and their excitement mirrors how he feels watching it himself.

And it was some pretty good inventing too. I still say this but every time I see drawings made digitally by you or others really makes me more eager to do as well. I ill waiting though until I get the Wacom so that I can do so. I mean I did have one at first, but didn't really know much, so I gave it back. But now I do realize I am missing a very great opportunity right now.

Don't give up on the pen-and-paper routine. It takes some time getting used to the fact that you're not looking at the surface you're drawing on. I will still draw things on paper and scan them before lining them digitally (and, in fact, the main picture of this piece was done that way).

It's all about the skills that you develop. They take a little tweaking when moving from one medium to another, but they're generally applicable everywhere. I've seen your work. You have a cute style and an understanding of key artistic concepts that I can see in the sketches behind your drawings. Those will all apply digitally, it's just easier to get rid of the sketches when they're on a separate layer.

Nhoa-D-Brown In reply to pulmonox [2015-06-20 01:07:40 +0000 UTC]

No I am good with doing all that, and I am very happy that I can finally scan as well. Pretty much I won't leave the paper because it is good to use, and I didn't ask momma to have it just for the heck of it. I pretty much just want to expand more a little and see what t is like. Really I want to try animating my story really. Especially the fight scenes. And thanks. I looked at some of your drawings as well and they also have good style too. ^v^
At first I used pencil to start things off when drawing, but I then decided to use a color pencil to see the outcome, and it looked a lot better, also as the pictures looked like they had been drawn digitally. But other than that really I just want to open it all up a little more. And besides, with all the supplies I have especially with markers, and colored pencils, there shouldn't really be much. I did think about it too when seeing pictures, maybe start it off as well drawing it on paper, scanning it then pretty much do the rest by some edits and that would be good.
