Though normally stoic and distant, Laurel knows enough about emotions to know when it's time to care. She's not heartless, and given her penchant for working with rookies she's seen her share of fear. Because it's so rare to see a smile on her face, it's a real attention-getter, and the few she allows the privilege are caught off guard, distracted from their woes by the sight, and calmed by the idea that they're witnessing a side to her that very few ever get to see. Always in private, though. There are rumors, of course, that no small number of rookie hunters have fallen in love with that smile, but they learn quickly it's not a road to travel.

Her quiet assurances have helped a number of new hunter hopefuls get over their early-mission jitters, and though she eventually leaves them in the hands of more experienced squadrons, most hunters that have worked with her hold her in high regards, and know that even when she's chewing them out, it's because she really does care.

But because of her own experience on the front lines, she also knows when to recognize the signs that maybe, for a particular reploid, combat isn't for them. She always leaves it up to them to decide, but she knows how to talk to a shell-shocked rookie, and is more than willing to offer them advice or educate them on other available options to assist in Hunter operations without fighting mavericks directly.
