Mr. Hoey was my tenth grade U.S. history teacher in my hometown. He passed away last week. He often began his lectures by telling us, "Class, there are two sides to every story."

For me at age 15-16, this was mind-blowing. He wasn't sarcastic, jaded, or cynical, either. He was conservative, responsible, and patriotic. Yet, he was the sort of teacher who wanted us to understand that, for instance, in 1776 while the 13 colonies had their reasons for wanting independence, the British ALSO had reasons for the colonies NOT becoming independent.

I sent the original drawing to the Hoey family.
